This device has been reset...

Good evening everyone,
A week ago, my wife gave her old P9 Lite to our son. He connected to it with his Google account without any issues. So we don't know what he did, but he reset the phone (he's the king of messing things up) and at the same time, he blocked his SIM card (that issue is resolved now). Anyway, this topic has been discussed many times online, but I couldn't find a case like mine.
So, I end up at startup (after a hard reset) with the infamous phrase that we all know: "This device has been reset. To continue..."
So we use his Gmail account, enter the password, which is the correct one (obviously), the phone asks us to repeat the process, and after this second attempt, a message appears: "Sorry, an error has occurred," and we're back to square one.
The various tutorials online have not helped me at all.
We tried with my wife's Google account (she was the first owner of the phone when it was new), and it's the same thing.
She just disconnected from her phone with her Google account; it doesn't change anything, and now I'm going to try another reset to see... but I have little hope...
Thank you.
