Hello,

I want to buy a new trail camera. So far, I have been using a camera that produces videos in AVI format. The new camera I want to buy produces videos in H264 format.

Since I do video editing, I use the Legacy photo software, and I would like to know if this new format is compatible with my software?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hello,

If you're talking about this software, it seems that yes, see the paragraph "Display photos and videos": https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows/qu-est-ce-que-photos-legacy-61255007-a189-4a02-8193-6ba18e5f96d3

Download link on the Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nv2l4xvmcxm?hl=fr-FR&gl=FR

I would also tell you that there are also free video editing software such as OpenShot, ShotCut, or DaVinci Recode if you have a computer capable of supporting it, which accept H264.

Best regards

Thank you for your response,

I am going to look for another camera that records videos in AVI format because I think H264 is not compatible.

I asked Gardepro, the brand of the camera, and they told me this:

"The H.264 format is mainly used for video compression. It is a common video encoding format, widely used for streaming, storing, and playing video files. Microsoft's legacy photo software (Photo Legacy) generally refers to the older version of Windows Photo Viewer or similar software. Its main function is to view and manage static images, such as JPEG, PNG, and other formats. The H.264 format is not suitable for storing static images. Therefore, Microsoft's legacy photo software is generally not directly compatible with the H.264 format. If you try to open a video file encoded in H.264 with the software, you may see a message indicating that the format is not supported or possibly cannot be opened. If you want to view H.264 videos on Windows, it is recommended to use software that supports this format, such as **Windows Media Player**, **VLC Player**, etc."

The camera:

But I read in the link you provided this:

"The legacy Photos app allows users to seamlessly view their photos and videos. It supports a wide range of file formats, including JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF for photos and MP4, MOV, and AVI for videos."

I have seen cameras with videos in MP4 format, so that gives me more options,

like this one for example:

Have a great day!
