Hello,

I keep getting this error when trying to update to 24H2 for W11.

When I check the necessary specs everything seems fine!

What is happening? How can I resolve the issue?

I have a Dell with a Core I7 1165G7, 1 TB SSD storage with 713 GB free

8 GB of RAM, UEFI BIOS mode, TPM ...

Thank you for your help

Hello,

Reason
The system reserved partition may be full. Some third-party antivirus and security applications write to it and can fill it up.

Press win+R to open the Run dialog

paste:

diskmgmt.msc

then hit enter

please provide a screenshot of the disk management in your next reply

It might look like this:

Hello,

The error indeed arises from an EFI partition that has become insufficient in size, why this is more often the case with 24H2 is another question.

Monsieur de la Palisse would have said that you either need to recover space or enlarge it.

The first approach is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing; some authors suggest deleting the font files.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/unable-to-update-to-windows-11-version-24h2-i-get/77e4950f-79e1-4d42-bbba-1bcf6df33916

The second involves a partition manager like Aomei Partition Assistant, where you will recover space from the adjacent partition, even if it means playing musical chairs to move that space along step by step.

Hello again,

Is the issue resolved without further ado?

The image doesn't tell us much apart from the 1.06 Go partition, the purpose of which we don't know.

As mentioned, we need to reduce the content of the 100 Mo EFI partition or increase its size; fortunately, it is adjacent to the system partition.

For your information, mine on 24H2 weighs 260 Mo.

Indeed, by following the method to access the EFI partition and deleting the Fonts files, we gain space.

I even got rid of the files in the ru-RU and ro-RO directories; they must be for booting in Russian and Romanian.

Now the 24h2 update seems to be downloading; I'm at 10% while it was stuck at 5%.

Thank you for the advice.

Sylvain

Good evening,

Usually, we bypass Aomei's paid functions by resizing-moving, creating free space to the left of the adjacent partition and reclaiming it to the right of the desired partition; here, indeed, we cannot do that because the software refuses to create free space to the left of the system partition, making the solution complicated for free.

We can try with Easeus or Niubi (never heard of the latter), but I fear the result will be the same:

https://www.easeus.fr/partition-manager-tips/redimensionner-la-partition-efi.html

https://www.hdd-tool.com/fr/windows-11/extend-efi-and-recovery-partition.html

If not, try the free version of Minitool Partition Wizard from its bootable USB:

https://telecharger.malekal.com/download/minitool-partition-wizard/

and apply the tutorial (in English) which is not really simple:

https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmanager/increase-efi-system-partition-size.html

In principle, the EFI size problem mainly results from PCs migrated to Windows 10, installing Windows 11 on a formatted disk creates the partition at the correct size, but that is not easy either: you need to back up your data to an external drive and then reinstall Windows 11 and the programs.
