5G Box as a fiber substitute. How to proceed?

Hello,

I just bought a house in a city center, surrounded by houses equipped with fiber.

However, mine is ineligible (no more space in the box according to Orange).. They are unable to give me a timeline, the ADSL is terrible..

Orange's only solution is to offer me a 5G box for the modest sum of €47 with the USB TV stick. Not great.

I have equipped the house with a communication box, there are RJ45 sockets in all rooms and I have equipment that does not have a WiFi card.

I would have liked to, at worst, connect the Orange 5G box to my network, but according to customer support, it only has an Ethernet output.

I find it quite crazy that a 5G box doesn't have the same functions as a standard box.

However, I saw a demo where someone connected an Android 11 smartphone via Ethernet modem mode to a wired network.

So I think it's possible.

I was thinking of buying a suitable modem or device, getting an unlimited 4G or 5G subscription, and setting up my own little personal setup, because Orange's hegemony that doesn't bother to connect 5 houses to the box and effectively forces you to take its 5G box is frustrating...

If you have already done setups that work, I’d take any tips.

And if you have managed to get Orange to move, I'd like that too.. I reported it to ARCEP but you need to have an ISP (seriously..)

Thank you for your help

Hello,

I understand your anger, even if it seems somewhat subdued, but there are a few inconsistencies.

Why do you need an ISP to make an ARCEP report?

First of all, an ISP and an operator are not quite the same thing.

As for your issue with the box that only has one Ethernet port, the solution is simple: just add a small (or big) Ethernet switch, it's not very expensive and it gets the job done.

To conclude,

a 5G box will never be a normal internet access point, and not just in terms of the number of Ethernet ports, there are plenty of other limitations we can discuss if you want to get into details, but basically, the mobile network is not the internet, just a semblance of it, except for professional products, but the price would make you sweat more than a shower could wash away.

And there you have it, voilà ....

But goodness, those line breaks are so annoying!!

Hello,

Thank you for this response. Indeed, I am angry, but I want to avoid getting on Orange's bad side for now so as not to be blacklisted.

I saw the option for the Switch, but in my case, my home setup, that is, all my network and my lovely RJ45 sockets, are useless.

We have on-call duties at work so internet access is essential. What puts me in trouble (I do my part of public service, you know...)

My son is studying development, so he won't be able to work when he comes to see me.

It may sound silly to say this, but internet has become indispensable and the fact that there aren't enough wires in a box is not my problem, indeed. It's Orange's problem, as they take all the profit because they have a monopoly (yet it is no longer a state-owned company).

If we opened it up to competition, I am convinced that I would have the line tomorrow.

I filed a complaint with ARCEP but I would like to go further.

Thanks again.

"I saw the option for the switch, but in this case, my home setup, namely all my network and my nice RJ45 sockets, are useless."

What are you talking about?

It has nothing to do with it; you place the switch in the communication cabinet to be able to use your wall RJ45 sockets from the patch panel:

Well, for now, let's forget the fiber part, that's all.

Finally, competition exists, even if Orange is your infrastructure operator, it’s not even certain, check the map.

You might even find yourself in a "demand connection" area; in that case, it must be completed within 6 months.

Hello,

Thank you Brupala for this detailed explanation. It’s super helpful.

So, can I connect a 5G or 4G box to my communication unit like a regular internet box?

That’s what I was planning to do until an Orange advisor on the Orange community forum told me it was impossible...

So indeed, I can take a 4G box from a competitor while waiting for Orange to decide to connect me...

Thanks for the info #connection area on demand#, I didn’t know that existed.

Hello, you mention "communication box" several times without specifying what it is. You have likely misled the Orange support service.

Why is it a problem that the 5G box only has one Ethernet output? How were you planning to connect the Fiber box to your mysterious communication box?

Hello,

A communication panel, also known as a VDI box, is a component of the electrical installation. It is located in the GTL (technical housing duct), usually below the electrical panel. It allows the distribution of media within the home, such as television, telephony, and Internet.

The one I currently have is connected to my fiber box through dedicated outputs for the phone, the TV box, Ethernet, etc.

From the VDI box, wires run to the RJ45 sockets throughout the house.

Generally speaking, this is not in the area where 4G or 5G reception is best, as it's near the meters and technical ducts. So placing a 5G box there is not effective, just as relying only on Wi-Fi when you have devices without Wi-Fi.

Indeed,

it is better to place a 4/5G box near a window, as the radio network is outside, if you are not lucky enough to be able to install an external antenna on this box.
