Hello,

I modified an Excel file from my PC yesterday, copied this file to a USB drive, and then deleted this file from my PC.

When I try to reopen or copy the file from this same USB drive to my PC today, I get the following message:

"Unable to open the file because its format or extension is not valid. Please check that the file is not damaged and that its extension matches the file's format."

My version of Excel: Microsoft Office Home and Student 2021

Windows 11 Home

What can I do to be able to open and use this file again?

Thank you

    Hello,

The extension of your file on the USB key must be .xlsx or .xlsm...!

    Hello to both of you

You can try opening it with LibreOffice (free), and if it works, save it as xlsx

Thank you for your quick feedback.

The file on my USB drive appears as "Microsoft Excel Worksheet" under "Type," and ".xlsx" as the "file extension."

I will try to open it with LibreOffice and will keep you updated.

Thank you again, as this file is important to me.

Well, unfortunately, it doesn't work either with Libre Office: message "read error. Unable to read the data from the file".

Yet, there was no problem with this file yesterday before copying it to the USB drive.

I can read all the other files on this same USB drive, especially the Excel files.

    Can I try other solutions?

    Thank you

    Hello,

Do you have this on your USB key:

If so, can you copy the file and paste it on the PC desktop..?

Yes, I can see the name of the USB drive displayed in the location indicated in your message.

But I'm unable to copy it to my PC because I receive the message:

"An unexpected error is preventing you from copying the file. If the problem persists, use the error code to seek help regarding this error.

    Error code: 0x80070570

    Hello,

    So this is it;

The error 0x80070570 often appears when you try to copy or move files from a USB drive, a pen drive, or an external hard drive. This error is due to file directory issues on the disk (FAT, MFT).

Personally, I can't do any more.

    Sorry.

    Yes, that's right.

I tried to "analyze and repair the drive," but it didn't help.

What is surprising is that the other files on this USB stick can be read.

I will wait for any other opinions, but thank you anyway for your help.

    Hello,

Oops, I forgot: check if the deleted file is still in the [Recycle Bin] ...!

@ lepingou: and no, nothing left in the trash.

    @danielco: I'll see if I try that.

Otherwise, I can try to take my key to a professional.

    Thank you

    Hello,

Have you tried opening it via the "Open" window?

You open Excel, then click on "Open", "Browse", select your file by clicking on it just once (no double-clicking!), and at the bottom, select "Open and Repair."

    Maybe?

    Good luck
