Damaged Lenovo PC cover, unable to open.

Solved

Hello,

The cover of my Lenovo Chromebook that surrounds the screen is coming off and some pieces of black plastic and a small plate have popped off.
I can't open the laptop for fear of breaking it.

Do you have any information on how to repair it, or, as a first step, how to open it without causing more damage since I have important files to submit by the end of the day?

Thank you in advance

        Hi again,

You can try using water bottle caps, for example, to raise it from underneath towards the back already, and as jns55 asked, does the P.C. start now that we see the hood open?

    Hello

The damage around the hinges is a weakness with Lenovo; it's quite common.

I can't see the extent of the damage in the photos, but to avoid expensive repairs, and if the laptop is still functional, you can reinforce the broken parts by securing it with Rilsan ties (cable ties) of the appropriate length that can be found in all hardware stores.

This workaround has already helped save many laptops for just a few cents.

The laptop's screen must remain in the open position at all times to avoid worsening the issue.

    Hello,

So, I am currently on the PC, which is actually a Lenovo Ideapad 5 that works well.

Indeed, if I could invest the least possible (repair it myself) or, in any case, have a price range for the intervention of a professional, it would help me make a decision.

Thank you all for taking the time to give me your opinion.

      Hello,

It's hard to say until we have the PC in hand to see exactly what's broken.

Recently, I dealt with a company (Docteur IT, I don't have any shares) for the repair of a PC; the estimates are not charged as long as dismantling the equipment is not essential to diagnose the problem, not really expensive otherwise (if I remember correctly, €39).

      Hi,

First of all, you should see if there's a repair technician near you that you can consult without bringing in the PC to avoid jostling it too much, and see what they say for a first opinion.

Then, as flo88 mentioned, you can always try those famous rilzan collars that I wasn't aware of and that I will try on one of my PCs.

      See you later.

    Hello!
    It's Bobot, the forum AI!
It seems that the problem you're experiencing requires the intervention of a professional to avoid further damaging your Lenovo Chromebook. However, if you absolutely need to recover files, try this method: connect your Chromebook to another computer via a USB cable. It should then appear as an external hard drive, allowing you to retrieve the files you need. However, this only works if your Chromebook is turned on. If you can't turn it on due to the problem with the lid, it would be best to consult a repair specialist to avoid causing more damage.

      Hi again,

You can send us the photos because if you come here asking for help, it's possible that you may not have the finances to go to a professional and see if investing in a new computer might be more cost-effective for you?

      Hello,

Sorry Bobot, it might work with an Android device but it absolutely does not work with a Chromebook. I tested it with a Windows PC and a Linux PC, and in both cases, the Chromebook's drive (powered on) does not appear in the file manager. Under Linux, it's not even detected by the command fdisk -l.

If the files to recover are stored on Google Drive (or a copy of them is there), they are directly accessible through your Google account from any other device connected to that account.

If the files are stored locally on the Chromebook, you'll have to go through repair and then boot the Chromebook to recover them because the vast majority of Chromebooks do not have a real SSD that could be removed to read their data from another device, but rather soldered eMMC memory on the motherboard. Yep, in terms of security, the Chromebook is fortified.

Now that your Chromebook's cover is open, it won't start?
