Network card PC limited to 100 Mbps

Hello everyone,

I would like to share my issue here:

I had to reformat my computer, and since then my network card is stuck at 100 Mbps, whereas before I could reach 1 Gbps. With speed tests on the internet, I'm maxing out at 70-80 Mbps.

I went into the network card settings, and when I select 1 Gbps, the connection fails, and no matter how long I wait and restart the box, there's no change. I noticed in the advanced settings that it's locked at 100 Mbps...

I updated my drivers, but it didn't help. I also tried to update my motherboard, an Asus ROG Strix 99 Gaming, on their website but to no avail... In the system explorer, my card is an Intel L218V, but I can't install the Gigabit version that allows reaching 1 Gbps.

Moreover, I literally removed the network card and the drivers by unplugging the network cable, but it automatically reinstalls itself. I thought if I run the Gigabyte drivers, it would work, but it didn’t...

I'm really lost; does anyone have a solution?

Good evening to everyone,

Regards,

    Hello @Kayser_78 StatusMember.

How are you connected? Directly to the box via PC, or through CPL, or using a wall RJ45 socket?

If your PC is directly connected to the box, change the Ethernet cable (PC==>box), as this limitation often comes from a cabling issue.

If your PC is not directly connected to the box, connect it directly to the box and check if the problem persists.

    Hello Bazfile,

I'm directly connected via RJ45 from my PC to the box, with a 10M cable.

The cable is new, I have 2 and the same speed.

Free's support tells me it's a hardware issue. I updated all the drivers and everything because I just reformatted the PC. Just before the reformatting, I had no speed issues. As a precaution, I reinstalled my 2.5GHz network card since the Freebox Pop can deliver that speed, but even by configuring the card, I'm still capped at 100mbits whether with my onboard network card or an external one...

It's definitely a hardware issue, try with another PC and if it's the same it could be coming from the box or your network card.

So I'm at a loss, according to the maconfig site all the drivers are up to date, even in the device manager when I want to update everything is fine, same with Windows Update.

After spending the evening fixing/searching for this problem by resetting the network cards, running CMD commands, msconfig and other tips found on the Microsoft site, I installed a software called Wise Care 365 and it found some drivers that I just installed, about ten, and now the problem seems to be resolved, my network card indeed shows 1Gbits...

I feel like my PC doesn't accept the old drivers because the card is using a driver version ending in .45 and my configuration told me that .57 was released, but when I installed it the PC reverted to .45, and with the software it finally accepted the latest version, my problem seems to be solved!

    @Kayser_78 StatusMember .

I don't know where you downloaded your old drivers, but for your network card Intel l218v you should always go to the Intel website or use the Intel Assistant which will notify you as soon as an update is available.

To update the drivers, you can also use the web app DriversCloud.

Yes, I downloaded from the Intel site, and even DriversCloud with automatic detection, nothing worked... The driver kept reverting to the default version 1.x.x.x.45. Strange, but thanks to this little software, everything is back in order!

      Best regards,

I’d like to follow up, as the problem has returned. I haven’t touched anything and it switched back to 100 Mbps, and of course, it’s impossible to set it to 1 Gbps.

I had a loss of connection, which then came back, and out of curiosity I checked, and there it is, 100 Mbps on the network card. Any idea?

    Best regards,

Go to the Device Manager, right-click on your network card, select "Uninstall," once your card is uninstalled restart your PC and it will reinstall automatically.

Same, it sets itself to 100mbits.

        - My current cable is new, it's 20m long, I placed the PC next to the box using some old Ethernet cables that were lying around and I'm at 1gbits. I'm thinking damn, maybe my cable is pinched somewhere because at one point it goes through a stone wall, or I did a core drilling to pass the cable and it might be damaged at some point.

I just moved the PC back to its original spot and now with my 20M cable that I’m using I’m at 1gbits, I’m starting to think maybe there’s an issue with this one... until during the day my connection cuts off and restarts and I’ll be back to 100mbits; I don’t really understand this mystical problem ^^!

        Have a good day,

As I told you in my first message, I think it's a wiring problem either with the cable itself or the Ethernet port of the network card; in my opinion, it comes from a loose connection somewhere.
