Error reinstalling mac os mountain lion
Trafalgar -
Hello, I pulled out an old MacBook Pro late 2011 from a dusty cabinet at home. I wanted to format it to reset it and give it away. I erased the disk and while trying to reinstall macOS Mountain Lion, I keep getting the following error: "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Please try running this application again."
No way to restart my PC normally since I erased the disk, so I'm going directly to the utility at startup. I find myself with a useless Mac..
If anyone has a solution, I'd appreciate it, thank you.

A MacBook Pro from late 2011 is eligible for High Sierra (macOS X 10.13.6). To perform an installation from the recovery partition, you need to hold down the Command Option R keys (see the description on this page). You should connect to the router via Ethernet, as the Wi-Fi connection causes too many problems for this type of operation.
If, for any reason, you're unable to do this, things will be a bit more complicated; you'll need to use a USB stick that must be created on another Mac by following the instructions on this page.
Hello at your home!

I tried the second solution because I have a second Mac, but the bootable USB drive I created is not detected at the startup disk choice. I created a drive with macOS High Sierra.
Did you follow "to the letter", step by step, the instructions given on the Apple support page?
In particular, is the application "Install macOS High Sierra.app" present in the /Applications folder? Is your drive named MyVolume? Are the messages displayed in Terminal consistent with those in the model (especially the line "Install media now available...")?
Since I am on macOS Ventura on my 2nd Mac, when I try to install High Sierra directly from the App Store, I encounter an error because the version I'm trying to install is too old compared to the one I have.
I looked around a bit and saw that some people were following the instructions (in the terminal) with the same issue as mine. The installation on the USB stick went correctly as indicated in Apple’s support with the exact messages. But when I plug it into my Mac, it doesn't detect it.
On Ventura, you cannot proceed with the first step, installing the application in /Applications. The rest is therefore impossible... You need to proceed differently, using the Mist application (see details on this page).
