Hello, my USB key is not recognized by my laptop. After checking that the USB ports are not damaged, I have to face the fact that my key is no longer recognized. I have all my work, thousands of folders in it. I don’t know what to do. Thank you for your solutions.

Hello,

a failure of any component can always happen, and when it comes to data storage, it's essential to make backups. In principle, a USB stick is already a backup, but you need to have it in duplicate.

Eventually, you can try the USB stick on a Linux system; they are often more flexible in reading this type of media.

And there you go, voilà ....

But goodness, those line spaces are so annoying!!

Hello, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I don't have a Linux system and I don't know anyone in my circle who has one. But thank you.

Can you start with a live USB .... does the PC read other USB drives that are not having the issue?

Thank you, I will try this approach and I'll come back to keep you informed. Thank you.

Hello,

The firmware is probably dead. Or it’s more likely that the firmware is dead.

There may be a chance to restore the firmware, but for the data, it’s less obvious. Let’s start with the beginning of a possible solution.

Tell me more about your USB key (Brand, Model, Size) * If applicable

And create a report (With the key connected) using ChipGenius.

Right-click in the ChipGenius window, then left-click on "Ok," and then use Ctrl + V to paste the text in your next response here.

Note: It may be perceived as a virus when it is not one at all.

Disable your antivirus real-time protection while carrying out this operation, or add the files to exceptions.

Hello fabul, I'm going to try, even though it's like Chinese to me. The key was given to me for my birthday by someone who has little means (he bought this key (1TB) on Ali Express). Yes, I know, big mistake, but he meant well. I have absolutely no technical data on the key.

I asked this person where he bought it, and he gave me the link. (Since then, I have lost hope, grrr) High-speed metal USB flash drive, USB 3.0, flash disk, USB key, 1 TB.

It seems obvious to me that it's a fake, but I'm not sure.

So most of the data has been copied in vain, the actual memory may be between 8 and 32GB.

The ChipGenius software would tell us more. (The download link I provided)

It looks like this when you start it

So you can either take a screenshot, or copy and paste the text by right-clicking > ("Ok") > Ctrl+V

We may find out the brand of the controller, the model of the controller, and maybe also the actual size of the memory chip.

From there, we could find software to reprogram the firmware.

Then an important thing to know, if we do a LLF while reprogramming the firmware, everything is erased 100%

Some programs allow reprogramming the firmware without a Low Level Format, then we could search with Photorec or Recuva for the data that might be there if the drive works again, but maybe only partially, due to fake capacity.

For the size

Flash ID code:      89D3AC32C204 - Intel - 1CE/Single Channel [QLC] -> Total Capacity = 1GB

This is a drive that seems to only have 1GB of actual memory chip.

So even if you were lucky, you wouldn't be able to recover more than 1GB of data; however, the drive may possibly be repaired.

Controller Vendor: FirstChip

The FirstChip tools can be found archived here https://www.usbdev.ru/files/firstchip/

The Controller Part-Number: chipYC2019

I don’t know exactly which tool corresponds to it

Maybe the last one at the bottom of the list here could detect it?

FirstChip FC1178/FC1179 MpTools V1.0.5.2 (2022-06-01)

https://www.usbdev.ru/files/firstchip/fc1179mptools/

You should check, but don’t flash it right away.

You need to see in "Setting" if there's a way to repair it without LLF (Low Level Format)

I cannot guarantee that you will recover any data; I don't know this tool by heart.

Start by launching FCMpTools

With the default setting

By changing it from Chinese to English

Click on Setting then do not enter a password

You will see the window where you can choose something other than Low Scan, High Scan I’m not sure what it does; I think that's what we want if we don’t want to erase everything.

To know better, it would be good to find instructions

After that, you click OK to close the window and click on Start in the main window.

(If it is detected)

If after a successful flash it appears in the explorer, you will be able to scan it with Photorec or Recuva for data.

Good luck.

It detects her, that's already a good sign, but it doesn't recognize the memory chip.

You can try the older tools on the same page, slowly working your way up from the bottom to the top.

Written in red, it is a memory recognition error; if it were OK, it would be a different color, like black, and green could be after successful reprogramming.

This is because the program must contain data to recognize the memory chip, not just the controller.

And sometimes, as the chips are no longer used in production, they can replace the data of the old chips with data about the new ones.

So there is at least one tool somewhere that detects the controller and the memory chip, recognizes it, and knows what to do with it; in older versions of the tools, normally, sometimes you have to try a bunch of them, and sometimes I take notes just in case I have to reprogram keys for which only an old program works.

It is indeed the brand FirstChip https://www.usbdev.ru/files/firstchip/

But I don't think it's very old; in the name of the FirstChip brand controller, model chipYC2019, there is 2019, so we can assume it is a model produced in 2019, (Although I might be mistaken) the chipYC2019 controller is not very well known to me,

The more well-known or common models from FirstChip are FC1178 and FC1179

And in my opinion, your controller should be reprogrammable (compatible) with one of the FirstChip programs released since 2019.

If you look on the main page of the FirstChip archives, a year is mentioned. The other link was for the MpTool (2022), but higher up you have the main page that I am giving you again for informational purposes mainly.

If you are spending too much time testing too many programs for 1GB, and it might be in vain, I cannot guarantee anything, you might as well throw it away.

There are programs of this type for several brands of USB key controllers; FirstChip is just one example, there are Alcor, ChipsBank, InnoStor, etc.

The programs and controllers of these brands are not inter-compatible; you need the program that is specifically made for the brand and the controller present in the key.

The only fairly complete series of archives for these programs that I know of is the linked site.

hi jpk36

here's what I do first

right-click on the Windows logo => Device Manager => in Universal Serial Bus controllers => I leave only the USB Root Hubs

if needed, I force the PC to shut down and restart it

then I plug in a USB mouse, a USB keyboard from a desktop PC => I restart the PC

then I finish with a USB flash drive and USB HDD

catch you later

Hello, thanks for the reply. I've already done that. But nothing... Windows has no access. Yet when I check the properties of the USB drive, it shows as full.

Re

could you take a screenshot of the "Disk Management"

(right click on the Windows logo)

and post it with the little mountain

hi

your window is too big, you need to reduce the white areas so that the window is smaller (3840 x 1374 px ???)

on a 22-inch screen, it's illegible

it doesn't appear => if it's the same on other PCs => there are strong indications that it is faulty

see you

re

some comments

- why put videos on an SSD ?? _ bitrate in UHD # 8 Mbit/s _ a HDD reads at a minimum of 50 Mo/s ( 1 Mo = 8 Mb )

- did you connect the hard drives ?? _ you must have struggled with the boot priorities in the BIOS

Hello Old Lame Bison, I see it appears as disk #4

Removable > No media

If we have an answer and can check with ChipGenius as mentioned in my previous message #9, we might know where to head.

I had my computer built; I chose the components, the case, the screen, etc., and it came assembled with Windows installed, etc.
