Connecting turntable - amplifier - mini chain

Anonymous user -
 Anonymous user -

Hello,

Following a move, I am reconnecting the cables for my equipment but I am not sure of myself.

In fact, I have a turntable GARRARD 125SB

an amplifier Roll Master 26710 where the cables have remained connected

a mini chain Philips FW-C80/22

I would like to confirm:
1/ connection of the 6-pin cable to the turntable -
2/ connection of the RCA red/white cable to the mini chain

Am I missing something?

I have been told about a "ground" cable but I don't see where it would be connected.

Thank you very much for your help as this is starting to get on my nerves ;-)

    what I would do

    Hello,

Thank you for your quick response.

    1/
Yes, but my turntable does not have the cable with the two red and white plugs. As you can see in the photo, it only has the cable with 5 pins which is connected to the amplifier. I bought it like that back then.

So the red and white cable goes from the amplifier to the stereo.

    2/
As for the ground, my amplifier does not have anything to the right of PHONO to connect the ground. Take a look at the photo. Should I change it? I've been told it improves the sound...
Where could I find one like yours?

    3/
However, you connect the cable going to the mini stereo in OUTPUT and not in AUX INPUT. What is the purpose of the latter?

    Hello,

The male 5-pin connector of the cable coming from the plate should be connected to the female 5-pin connector, which is connected via two RCA plugs (black-red) to the phono inputs of the Roll Master preamp.

The RCA outputs (output) of the Roll Master preamp are connected to two white cables that need to be connected to the IN/CDR (L -R) inputs of the Philips system. Please note that the red output of the preamp must be connected to the red IN/CDR input (R) of the system and the white output to the white (L).

As for the ground wire, which is white and taken under a screw of the plate, it needs to be stripped at the other end and connected under the screw marked GRD of the Roll Master preamp.

    Hello,

It's well understood EXCEPT that my amplifier doesn't have the GRD screw. Look at my photo

Unless the button on the left is for that....

The "button" on the left is a power on/off switch.

On each side of this ON/OFF switch, there is a screw... pin down the end of your stripped white wire under the head of one of these screws.

baladur13 you are awesome. I was thinking that this turntable was working well before the move even though it's not brand new. However, I was wondering if I should change the cables... do you have a website other than Amazon that is cheap?

In the meantime, I will test all of this and come back to discuss it.

    Thank you very much ;-)

For the speaker wire, I was sold this, but I have no markers (red-white).

I suppose I need to buy more. Can you tell me what type of cable to buy?

=> speaker cable with a conductor of 2 x 0.75mm², will that work?

    Thank you! ;-)

This type of cable can do the job as long as you properly identify the two ends of each of the 2 wires that make up this cable. This way, the wire connected to the + terminal of the amplifier ends up connected to the + terminal of the speaker, and the same goes for the - terminals.

Speaker wire (black and red) will be easier to install; you just need to connect the black wire to the labeled - terminals and the red wire to the labeled + terminals. A 0.75mm² cable should be sufficient if the speakers are not very far from the amplifier.

If everything is off to the side, then it is quite easy to spot the wires of the translucent cable shown in the photo.

I prefer a red and white cable, it's simpler.

So if I understood correctly, it's the white cable from the amplifier that serves as the ground?

Is the stripped end enough to secure it because I'm having trouble wrapping it, it's too small....

For the speaker cables, here is the diagram of the mini chain: the problem is I have no markers to know which is the left or right speaker!

The right speaker is the one you place to the right of the chain (viewed from the front), and thus the left one is to its left.

    Oh okay, THANK YOU.

So now I just need to find the FM 75 antenna since I no longer have it (I still have the AM one) AND I can't find it anywhere outside of Amazon since I'm no longer there.

Once everything is properly connected, I'll buy a new diamond and we'll be off ;-)

Not at all a specialist when it comes to antennas.

As for the effectiveness, it all depends on the distance between your home and the FM transmitter.

If too far away (>10Km) for indoor antennas, it’s better to get amplified antennas.

You can find FM antennas everywhere in specialized stores and large supermarkets.

      "I left Amazon" ???? what's the problem???

      The same at Cdiscount: https://www.cdiscount.com/high-tech/accessoires/antenne-radio-fm-75-ohm-f-type-antenne-telescopiqu/f-10628-auc2008501766386.html?idOffre=2557499920#mpos=0|mp

There is a transmitter in St Brieuc itself and numerous ones not too far away (<5Km) ... not too much concern about reception.

As for the amplified antenna... it's just to ensure a comfortable signal.

The 75 Ohms is the impedance of all FM antennas, no worries there.

For the amplified antenna you are showing on Amazon, I don't see what the connection problem would be; it comes with several connectors, including this one

which should do the job perfectly.

    Hello,

Because I was wondering what this is for:

So for you, would this type of antenna work? I need to find it elsewhere....

I found one here, is it the same thing for you because it has a double connection?!? :

    Or this one:

    What is this for...
The black box is the amplifier. The USB port is used to power it. The type F male connector is used to connect the amplifier to the FM input of your system via an adapter. The other type F female connector on the other side of the box is where the antenna plugs in.

I still don't understand why you can't order from Amazon... but that's your problem.

The two antennas from Fruugo or Euroelectronics can also do the trick. But there, no adapter (like the connector shown in message 10). Both antennas come with male F connectors.

    https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiche_F

But before buying an antenna, have you tried your system without an antenna connected... it might work since the transmitters are close.

    Hello,

You're too technical for me, I don't understand anything.

What I would like to know is whether EuroElectronic's antenna will work, because that's the one I'm interested in.

    They have what it takes:

Indeed, I would buy it once the connections are made and if it's not terrible.

As for Amazon, after ten years of loyalty, I used to buy a lot out of habit after doing previous research, so most of my reviews were 4/5 stars. They treated me like a dog following a comment, which they couldn't even tell me which one and why. I didn't understand, and since they have blocked all my comments from the beginning, I told them they wouldn't get another cent from me and cut ties. I don't regret it; since then I've spent less and I prefer to support mostly French suppliers directly.

I hadn't paid attention to the cable provided with the Euroelectronic antenna.

      This antenna is just fine.

    Hello,

So they replied to me with some technical jargon that I don't understand. I therefore sent them a photo of the back of my system to ask for confirmation about the possible connection or not. Apparently, it's complicated to get through, although I am quite direct in my questions.

The Ebay.fr seller as well. I'm ordering this from him:

I'm also taking this opportunity to ask him what length of cable to use for better sound....he replies, "What do you mean by that? Which system? If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. If you need more information, don't hesitate to contact me."

I replied, "your answer is very concerning" and I re-explained to him ;-(((

For the antenna, I told you that the connection cable provided is suitable.

The length of the cables between the receiver and the speakers does not affect the sound quality. The cable slightly attenuates the signal provided by the receiver... over a few meters, it's negligible.

You told me earlier that the speakers are next to the receiver. So you add about twenty centimeters to the distance between the receiver's outputs and the speakers' inputs.

Yes, the chain and the speakers are close, no choice otherwise I have to drill holes in the walls and I don't want to.

So I'm waiting for the cables and I will set it all up and we'll talk about it again.

    Hello @baladur13 StatusModerator

I received the cable today, so I connected the speakers to the system following the instructions.

Small problem: the little "black" flap to hold the cable popped out. Actually, I think the spring underneath has loosened. So I fiddled around to make it hold, and stubborn as I am, I managed.

EVERYTHING IS WORKING GREAT, I had forgotten how good this mini system sounded. After that, I will find my favorite channels and save them, but for now, I’m going to need the book because I’ve forgotten everything ;-)

So tomorrow I will test the turntable.

    Hello,

Well, the platter is spinning slowly and then stops. There is surely a belt issue.

In your opinion, is it easy to change or not?

I found one here (I'll look for a cheaper one):
