Choosing a graphics card

Hello dear community,

I have a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF, and I would like to upgrade the graphics card.

I don’t know which model to choose, or what to look for in terms of compatibility. Considering that there isn’t much space in the SFF case.

Thank you for your help.

    Hello

This type of case is not very upgradeable; for a graphics card, you need to open it and measure the potentially available space or take the measurements of the one in place to use as a reference.

Maybe a native low-profile graphics card... but the models on the market are not widespread, generally dedicated to office use...

Hello, yes you need a "low-profile" graphics card.

Here's a small list from Nvidia:

    • Nvidia GT 710
    • Nvidia GT 1030
    • Nvidia Quadro P400

    And from AMD:

    • AMD Radeon R5 240
    • AMD Radeon RX 550
    • AMD FirePro W2100

Make sure that your Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF's power supply is sufficient to power this graphics card. ;)

    hi

    this is this tower model

it is a low profile graphics card

    Gigabyte Rx 6400 d6 low profile 4gb => https://www.darty.com/nav/achat/informatique/composant/carte_graphique/gigyte_rx_6400_d6_low_profile_4gb_gddr6_64bit_dp_hdmi__MK2129547325.html?ofmp=94569800

ask the question if the low profile bracket is included because it is specific

Hey, I'm not convinced that a graphics card costing twice the price of the computer is the most suitable solution, especially since it is compatible with a PCI Express 4.0 x16 bus, while the motherboard of the Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF has a PCI Express 3.0 x16 graphics slot, so it will be throttled and backward compatible with PCI Express 3.0 x16. A solution for 25 or 50€ (PCI Express 3.0 x16) would be the best option for an upgrade.

    Hello,

First, you need to know the power of your power supply. Then you must be careful on certain Dell Optiplex models, as the motherboard configuration does not allow the installation of low-profile dual-slot graphics cards, which will further limit your choices. Post a picture of your motherboard and check what its maximum power is on the power supply.

Here is a photo of the location, and I have quite little space.

The power supply indicates a maximum of 255W.

The good news is that the power supply is sufficient to power a 75W graphics card.

The bad news is that the PCIE X16 port is poorly placed; it is in the last slot, which means you won't be able to install dual slot cards like the RTX A2000, GTX 1630, or GTX 1650. However, there is still the option of the RX 6400, which is available in single slot. In some games, it will be slightly constrained by the PCIE 3.0 bus, but the performance will still be acceptable.

      Hi,

"the performance will still be decent..."

Only at the graphics card level? Because it's definitely an alien for this PC.

      For the rest :

      - 4 GB of RAM

      - i5 4th generation

it's not going to get very far.

The conclusion might be what I was implying in my answer 1: unnecessary upgrade...

I've seen this graphics card, would it be suitable?

I feel like it would be (for multimedia and casual gaming), but I don't want to make a mistake.

    Thank you in advance.

      besides

the GT 1030 (formerly GT 730), that should be the GPU you currently have

I don't have a graphics card at the moment. The photo you posted is the version already above mine.

Graphics card manufacturers are quite generous with their power supply recommendations; your processor should consume about 55W at full load, plus the 75W from the GPU and around an additional thirty watts for the rest of the components, which brings the total to 160W. The 255W from your power supply is sufficient to power all of that.

How to accurately determine the available power in a PC today?

    Hi,

here are 2 models that would be perfectly compatible with your PC

and that offer good performance / acceptable price: a little more than the GT 1030 and a little less than the OVNI for your PC, the RX 6400

    • AMD Radeon RX 550
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti

(I think that even second-hand... you wouldn't be taking much risk if you find one for €20 or €50 (it's not the kind of card that is interesting for mining))
