How to locate someone from Leboncoin
Schneor Posted messages 9 Status Membre -
Good evening
I was scammed last Friday by someone selling a white Nintendo Switch OLED and several games on Leboncoin for 215 euros...
I was tempted by the ad and sent the money via PayPal because the person sent me a purchase invoice from last month as well as an identification card that claimed to be theirs, but the ID was not theirs; they assumed someone else's identity.
I would like to know if it is possible to obtain the IP address of the scammer so that I can do my own investigation and then pass the information to the police, who would handle the investigation.
Thank you to everyone who understands me and can help me.

Hello
To risk disappointing you, no, that's not possible; we are in reality, not in a police drama, and besides, an IP can be spoofed. I'm sorry.
There are tips for buying or selling on sites like Le Bon Coin. I recommend that you always read these tips that are on every site FIRST.
The minimum to do now is to report the seller as unreliable so that their account can be closed. Even if it probably doesn’t do much since it’s a fake.
Best regards
If you really paid with PayPal, which is a bad idea, you can also report to PayPal that this person is dishonest. Even though it’s not a total guarantee, you should always stay on the platform of the sales site and pay through the sales site. NEVER go off the site for sharing info, messages, or for payment.
Additionally, a simple image of an invoice means absolutely nothing; I can create one in 15 minutes on my computer.
And finally, selling in person and in VIEW is the best guarantee.
There are not only VPNs to remain discreet, but anyway, I said that even if you have the IP, it won't help you because:
First, it doesn't locate people very precisely, in fact, it's very imprecise (it only works in movies).
Second, IPs are dynamic and change regularly.
Only authorities have access to more precise information upon judicial requisition.
As for the refund, there is no solution since on Le Bon Coin you have apparently stepped outside the site's payment circuit, so LBC will rightfully absolve itself of that responsibility.
On Paypal you can try, but if you, as you probably did, made a direct "friend" payment, Paypal knows nothing about the transaction on LBC; it's a voluntary payment on your part. However, on Paypal, in principle, it's no longer possible to open an account not linked to a bank account; they at least know that, but they are not obligated to disclose it.
And if they're fake accounts that are going to disappear soon...
File a complaint; you never know, the crook might be very foolish.
Yes, the person asked me for payment between friends, so there is no possibility for me to get reimbursed through a PayPal dispute.
