Processor 80 to 90 degrees at rest (Laptop)

Hello,

I have an Asus Laptop equipped with a Ryzen 5 3500U (Vivobook D409DA), and since I got it (~1 year ago), I’ve noticed it heats up a lot + the processor isn’t performing at full power (it’s a struggle to run Minecraft or CS:GO)

I didn't pay much attention to it (since I mainly use it for note-taking) until today when I installed software to check the component temperatures: 75-80, occasionally reaching 90 degrees at idle (or just with Firefox open) for the CPU.
I disassembled the laptop; there was no dust in the fan, so I changed the thermal paste on the processor just in case. But it doesn’t really change anything.

What’s baffling is that as I write this text, it’s at 55 degrees. Yet I have several tabs open + Discord. And sometimes, for no apparent reason, it jumps to 80 degrees for about 15 minutes. But there’s nothing running in the background that could cause this temperature spike. I’ve also noticed that slightly elevating the laptop makes the CPU run a bit cooler.

Anyway, I have no idea where this could be coming from. But because of this, it’s almost impossible to play games if I want to.

    Hello

A laptop not really made for gaming. It overheats.

If it improves when lifted depending on the shape and location of the air intake vents, using a ventilated stand can help in this case.

For periods of 15 minutes, is it hot??

Check if speeding up the fans earlier at low-medium temperature and reaching max speed sooner can limit the occurrence of these warmer periods or control them before the temperature throttles the CPU (the temperature rises quickly but cooling takes time to kick in). Limit power dissipation more than on a desktop PC.

Aside from breakdowns/various correction solutions from manufacturers like ASUS/AMD/etc.

A laptop fan can fail already after a year on a gaming laptop, but most of the time it runs more in this case.

    Hello,

In your control panel under "Hardware and Sound," then in "Power Options," go to modify the "plan settings" (the one active), then "change advanced power settings," then in "Processor power management" and finally in "Cooling Policy," are both set to active? If not, the issue could stem from that since the fan wouldn't be running.

    Best regards

    Hello,

    Thank you for your responses.
Both were indeed active. So I don't think that's where the problem lies. Besides, it runs at an average of 1050RPM when the processor is at ~60 degrees.
But I might have understood the issue. While looking at the fan speed with SpeedFan, I noticed that when the processor reached +80 degrees, the fan dropped to 800RPM.
So it could be a problem with the fan that sometimes slows down, causing the processor temperature to rise? This is somewhat related to what Julio told me (unless it's obviously a physical problem with the fan)

Do you know of any software that can control the fans of a laptop? There are plenty for desktops, but most don't work for laptops...

    (Re)hello,

If your laptop is not too recent, meaning before 2019 (around the maximum since no more compatibility updates have come out since), the software Speedfan could help solve your problem. Indeed, I just tested it on an (very) old laptop and it allows me to manage at least the minimum and maximum of my PC's fan or even set a fixed speed (my fan doesn't make noise so I chose to keep it at 100% constant even though, of course, it's not the best choice for both its lifespan and for the noise it might produce on certain PCs). On some newer ones, I understand that you could have a curve to manage the fan speed according to its temperature, which would be the best thing for you. However, it needs to be restarted manually at each startup because it doesn't have the option to start with Windows available.

    Best regards
