Hello,

When I create a new shortcut on the Windows 10 desktop with Chrome or if I drag the address from the address bar to create a new shortcut on the desktop, the webpage does not display when clicking on the shortcut icon, but instead, a window opens with the address of the site that was shortened.

Where could this be coming from?

Thank you for the response.

Windows / Chrome 104.0.0.0

Can you try to create the shortcut "manually" and test its functionality?

    Let me explain:

    • Right-click on the Desktop and choose New => Shortcut
    • Then paste the URL of the webpage into Location of the item.
    • Finish by clicking Next and naming your shortcut.

What is well conceived is clearly expressed,
And the words to say it come easily.

    Hello,

I don't see any difficulties: by dragging the address to the desktop I immediately create a functional shortcut.

    1) Have you tried using the Create Shortcut menu?

    2) Right-click on the shortcut and choose Open with
Select the browser and check the box to always use this program.

Thank you for the reply, but it doesn't work; however, Chrome is my default browser. Everything works well on my other computer, so there must be a setting in Chrome that is causing this malfunction, but which one?

      Hello,

The procedure indicated by Pierr10 creates a lnk shortcut that points to a complicated target, where we can at least check that the path to the executable chrome.exe is valid.

An alternative is to create a url shortcut: copy the address of the link you want to shortcut, right-click on the desktop, new, shortcut, paste.

In both cases, the procedure may fail because we copy the name of the link, and not its address, hence the mentioned issues: before any manipulation, right-click in the address bar, always check to display the full urls.

    Hello,

Yes, it was the Pier10 solution that I had been using until now which no longer worked.

By chance, I set Edge as the default browser; it opened the created shortcuts correctly, and then I switched back to Chrome as the default browser and everything is back to normal. Computing is full of mysteries.

    Have a good evening.
