Remove a default application for a file type

Hello everyone,

I wanted to do a test by opening a file with an application through the context menu Open with > Choose another app for a test, after choosing an application, I forgot to uncheck Always use this app to open files ...

Is there a way to remove the default application so that there is no application by default and return to Choose a default app?

For example, in this image, I would like to remove the default application Notepad for opening a .bak file so that it is like the two applications below, Choose a default app.


I deleted the Notepad application from Windows once and indeed, the .bak files no longer have a default application, but I no longer have the Notepad from Windows.
I reinstalled Notepad thinking that the .bak files would no longer have a default application, but it was kept in memory and when I reinstalled the Notepad from Windows, it became the default application to open .bak files again

After some research, I only found solutions to choose a new default application but not to remove a default application so that there is no default application for opening .bak files
I also reset the default applications but it didn't work.

Is this possible?

Configuration: Windows / Firefox 99.0

    Hello,

    Check in settings/applications/default applications and at the bottom "reset", however be careful as this strictly resets all default associations! For just one type of extension, I don't know... But if you don't have many to restore, that could be an option.

    Try opening the command prompt as an administrator and enter:

    assoc .bak=

    so nothing after the equals sign.

    If the problem persists, try this:

    Press Windows + R
    Type --> regedit.exe and hit OK.

    Follow this path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    Explorer\FileExts

    Locate the extension --> .bak
    In subfolders, delete --> UserChoice
    Close the registry
    Restart the PC.

    I can't find the UserChoice folder in the .bk folder in the registry.
    I've opened the registry as an administrator.

    I wanted to do a test


    Perform a system restore and choose a date prior to the issue.

    Windows + R
    Type --> rstrui.exe and OK.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    If there is no previous date, perform a repair of Windows 10.
    Check this out --> Repair Windows 10 without data loss
