Printing problem with page selection

Solved

Hello,

I have a problem with my Word documents. When I want to print a selection of pages and not the entire document, the printing doesn't start.

I tried creating a document from scratch and the selection works, but for all my old documents, it's no longer possible.

I created a PDF of the Word document, and in this case, the page selection works when printing, so the problem is indeed with Word.

Could you please help me resolve this issue?

Best regards,

Hello,

I have been experiencing exactly the same issues for several weeks... it seems to be related to a modification in the Word code by the developers.

A solution has been found at:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_word-mso_win10-mso_365hp/print-capability-in-a-large-word-document-word-for/c069e156-cef2-4fb3-ace4-dd45d3c93ee6

Activate the "Update fields before printing" option in File>Options>Display

Hello
Have you checked that the A4 paper size is indeed the format of the document to be printed?
Sometimes, choosing the wrong paper size can "block" the printing; some printer drivers don't care, while others are sensitive to the format.

To enforce the correct format throughout the entire document (it may contain sections with different formats)
1) Select the entire document with Ctrl+A
2) Choose in "Page Layout" the correct "Size" of A4 paper or A4 Landscape (depending on the document), validate, and Save As... (give it a different name, just in case).
Check the printing.
See you later

Hello,

Thank you for your response; however, it did not help to solve my problem.

I had already checked that the format (A4 in this case) was correct. I tried applying the layout update to the entire document with ctrl+A, but the printing still does not start.

Sincerely,

Hello
Oh, sorry.
You can try using Ctrl+A to select everything and Ctrl+V to paste it into a new blank document, you shouldn’t lose the formatting.
This way, we can figure out if it's the document that's causing issues or just its content, that's already something.
See you later

Hello,

Thank you for your response. It must be a content issue, because when I did ctrl+A / ctrl+V into a new document, the selective printing of pages still doesn't work...

Hello
So this is going to be more tedious...
After Ctrl-A, check if your paragraphs are in Chains, with specific choices (just widow and orphan by default)...
Test if it's good... Otherwise:
Show the hidden "characters" (the upside-down P) and remove the section breaks (dotted line -> Columns, alternate header/footer, etc...)
Of course, this implies having to redo them if necessary :-(
Test again, etc...
Possibly the page breaks (single dotted line).

In short, look for it or if you like working, do Ctrl+A and in a blank doc, right-click, Paste Options, choose A (plain text only)...

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

I copied the plain text into a new document and in this case, printing works.

I checked in paragraphs/Breaks that there are no specific choices or even applied them, but that did not solve the issue.

There are no section breaks in the document.

I tried removing certain elements like footers and headers or the table of contents. After numerous deletions, printing works, but when I only remove the last deleted element in the original document, it does not resolve the issue.

Hello
Yes, as I told you, it's a long-term effort to "find" the disruptive element.
Check the header and footer dimensions, also look at the margins, try to "enlarge" them (for example, changing from 1 to 1.25), as the drivers handle margins that are too small poorly.
See you!

Hello,

I managed to better pinpoint the issue. In order for printing a selection of pages to work, I have to remove the page numbering in the footer and the table of contents.
The problem is that even when I recreate one of these elements, printing a selection of pages no longer works...

Hello
Well, that's something!
How do you make your selection printing?
In the print options -> Pages 5:12 (for example)?

Try the same thing by choosing, for example, the PDF printer (if available on your machine, included in Win10).

A+

Hello,

I'm selecting my pages in Settings / Pages of your screen print, I specify 3-4 for example (3:4 is not a valid entry, error message).

I had already tested printing to PDF or to other printers on my network, but printing does not work in any case.

Best regards,

I have the same problem. Have you found a solution? I tried removing the footers and it worked once, but after that even if I remove the footers again, the problem persists...

Hello,
I still haven't found a solution.
However, it's systematic for me that when there is pagination in the footer or in a table of contents, printing a selection of pages no longer works.

Hello

Clearly, to me, you have one or more section breaks.
For example, if the first section with the table of contents contains only one page, indicating to print pages 1 to 4 will inevitably give you this error message.

So do a Search and in the Search box, type ^b.
Section breaks are sometimes hard to see, especially if they are at the end of a line.

Be careful, do not delete a section break like that. The section break contains all the formatting that comes before it.

To print pages within a section, you need to specify the section, for example:
p3s2-p5s2
to print pages 3 to 5 of section 2.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply, but there are no section breaks in my documents.

The issue arises even when I create a document from scratch of 3 or 4 pages with "test" written on each page, and when I add a footer with pagination or insert a table of contents.

No error message appears when pressing print, but the print job is not sent to the printer (even PDF).

Best regards,

After research, it turns out that it is a bug that Microsoft is currently fixing.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/word-will-not-print-page-range/6c55886e-1c89-41e5-aa15-2e6631c3940b

Are your updates done?
