Unable to click on a Photoshop element

Hello,
The title of my question is not very clear, so I'll try to clarify it here. I've been having a problem with Photoshop for a while now. When I try to click on an element in my workspace, I can't select it. I have to go through the layer or hold down Ctrl while clicking at the same time. It's very annoying because I can no longer make a wide selection by clicking and dragging my mouse without holding down Ctrl at the same time.
Do you have a solution?? I can't find an answer anywhere.
