Hello,
On my old computer, there was a software that allowed me to view photos and images very quickly, unlike my new computer where it takes 30 seconds to open each photo. That's very long.
What software can you recommend for quickly displaying my photos? I don’t need any editing or anything else. I just need to open them.
Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hello,

You may have been using the Windows Photo Viewer.
To find it again:

However, I agree with georges97: there is certainly a problem with your computer. It's not normal to have such a long opening time.
(On my computer, I use Photos and the display is almost instantaneous, even for 13 MB photos stored on an HDD).

Hello,
I just opened your link and reading the page reassured me because the article clearly states that the "photo" application sometimes takes too long to open. Which is the case for me.
So, thank you for this link which I hope will also allow me to have the photo viewer. And it seems to me that this is what I had on my old computer. I will therefore try to install the photo viewer on my computer and I will keep both of you updated.
I wish you and Georges97 a good evening.

Hello,

30 seconds is indeed prohibitive. You should have indicated which software you were previously using to open your photos and which one is appearing now.

In any case, you can try using the pre-installed Microsoft Photos software by right-clicking and selecting "open with" on the file you want to open.

You can also test in the same way with Paint, either as before or by first opening Paint from the Accessories menu under the Windows button, then opening... the desired file.

Opening a file should not take more than one or two seconds. Paint allows for modifications, but I'm only suggesting it for testing purposes.

If the trial is successful, you can associate the types of photos (jpg, png, etc.) with the chosen software in the "open with" menu.

Best regards

Thank you Georges97 for your response.
I don't know which software was on my old computer. It was installed at purchase and I never took care of it. I clicked on a photo that opened quickly and the others followed if I wanted.
It's incredible, but yes my new computer takes nearly 30 seconds to open each photo. I counted the seconds so much that I found it long. But my computer has slowed down, not just for the photos by the way.
On my WINDOWS 10 PC is the software "photos". And it is this software that takes a long time to open each photo. So I downloaded the IrfanView software. With this software, photos open very quickly, but the problem is that they do not scroll. I have to open them one by one. Maybe I don't know how to use IrfanView? That's quite possible. There is indeed an arrow, but when I click to scroll through the photos, a long message in English appears every time.
I will try with PAINT. But it seems to me that it wasn't great either.
Thanks again for replying to me. I wish you a good day.

The software "Photos". And it's this software that takes a long time to open for each photo.

Can you do the following test: when Photos is open, what is the time it takes to switch from one photo to another using the clickable tabs on each side of the photo or by pressing the arrow keys on the keyboard?

For me, it's instantaneous. If that's also the case for you, that would mean that the issue is with the program's opening itself and not the files.

The problem of this slowness would therefore be the same with any software. It may be due to the performance of the PC, either because it's one of those new entry-level notebooks with an "economic" processor and that you can't change either the RAM capacity or upgrade to a much faster SSD, or the RAM capacity on a "classic" PC is too low.

In the latter case, you would need to increase the RAM, after checking the maximum possible, but preferably if you have an Intel I5 level processor to avoid insufficient improvement. In this latter case, an SSD would be effective but would require a reinstallation of Windows.

As for Irfanview, it should be possible to scroll through the photos, at least those in the same folder, using the arrow keys. But I haven't had it for a long time.

The fact is that if the images open quickly, it contradicts what I mentioned earlier about the supposed slowness of your PC.

I look forward to hearing from you after your tests, and please remember to indicate your PC's reference.

Have a nice Sunday.

Hello,
In response to you, I would say that if the "photo" software takes 30 seconds to open, once opened I can scroll through the photos quite quickly. It takes me 30 seconds to open a photo from the moment I closed the "photos" software. For example, I scan an image and I open the "photo" software. Then I close it. Later, if I scan another image or want to look at a photo, I have to wait another 30 seconds for it to appear.
It's the opening time that annoys me, and 30 seconds is a long time. Well, for me. I recognize that I am quite impatient. It must be the times we live in. We want everything to happen quickly.

Here I am again.
So, I just installed the photo viewer. I registered it in the registry with a bit of fear since I'm not an IT specialist. Messing with the registry is always scary.
Then I followed all the steps. I did some tests and it's fantastic. Now when I click on a photo it opens instantly and all the others scroll quickly as well.
Thank you very much.
So that's one problem solved and a good day starting for me. (It's morning here).
Best regards.
