Hello, let me explain my personal situation: as a student, I work on a Klipad KL7591 tablet running Android 8.1.0. I save all my personal docs (texts, photos, pdfs, etc.) on my parents' laptop or on a USB stick (I refuse to use clouds for personal docs).
Since I'm moving into shared accommodation soon, I'm looking for a solution (an app?) to protect my USB stick until I can save up to buy a decent computer; the idea is to protect the stick with a password so that no one can access its content or add a program to crack it. The thing is, I really want to avoid something too complicated and cumbersome to implement, I'm not a specialist, and I edit some docs every day. And most importantly, I really want to avoid clouds for now.

Hello,
I can only warn you against software solutions that may either be decrypted one day or lead to blockages with no recourse against the publishers who are well protected in their terms and conditions (see irretrievable data with Microsoft Bitlocker or Truecrypt).
However, the fact that products are paid, especially this type of product, seems completely normal to me given the work involved in their design.
I would therefore recommend a hardware solution such as coded keys, like this one:

Moreover, since an electronic failure can occur on any product, it is advisable to back up regularly on a separate device (PC) to have your work available as you will have no recourse in the event of an incident or loss.
Otherwise, you have the "old-fashioned" solution which consists of using a coded briefcase. It’s bulkier and requires discipline not to forget to scramble the code.
Additionally, the briefcase or a mini-safe can always be stolen and opened, but unless you are on the verge of discovering THE vaccine or working for the National Defense, you will only lose "YOUR" work.
