I can't use my network card at 1Gb/s.

Good evening or hello everyone,

I am presenting my problem which I have examined from all angles, but everything has been unsuccessful.

Since yesterday, I have fiber at home (FTTH) with the Orange offer of 2Gb/s shared (so 1Gb/s max per device). I connected my PC via Ethernet to the box, to get the best possible speed.
I am very surprised to see that I have 90Mb/s in download and roughly the same in upload.

I was expecting something more like 800/900 Mb/s. (I have done the test several times at different times and on several sites). I have researched my problem and saw that my network card is at 100Mb/s in auto-negotiation.

I then tried to set my card speed to 1Gb/s full duplex in the settings, and when I do this I automatically lose my connection; however, when I switch the speed back to 100Mb/s in full duplex, everything returns to normal.

I consequently have several hypotheses:
- the problem comes from the network card and I should change it
- the problem is due to my Cat5e Ethernet cable
- the problem comes from the port of my box which does not support 1 Gb/s (unlikely since it's a very recent Livebox 5)
- the problem comes from the drivers of the network card.

So here are my hypotheses. I would like to ask you to guide me on the most likely source of the problem and what solutions could solve it.

Thank you

Have a good evening or day

    Hello,
The most likely issue is the cable, then a network card failure, and finally the box.
As long as it is configured to auto, it cannot be the driver, the negotiation is internal to the card with the port on the other side.

    Thank you for your response,

Indeed, I did some further research this morning and I noticed that my cable had 4 wires and not 8, so it's impossible to reach gigabit/second in Cat 5 with 4 wires.
I will therefore change the cable and it should work. I will also mark this as resolved.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

It's possible that your network card/cable is not performant/recent enough indeed.

Just out of curiosity, when you do a test, do you get 90 Mb/s or 90 MB/s (Mo/S)? Best regards.

      Good evening,

Out of politeness, I am responding to you.

The speed test shows 90 Mb/s and not 90 MB/s (B for byte = 1 byte) and b for bit = 1/8 of a byte. My connection is indeed limited to 100 Mb/s because of the cable, but I'm buying another one tomorrow. I also checked my network card, and it does support 1Gb/s.

      I hope I was clear.

Thank you for your response and have a nice evening.
