Hello,
I took my son's PC this summer because he wasn't using it anymore and it had become very slow due to many game downloads. It's running on VISTA (I know it's outdated!) and I just want to use it to browse the internet.
I backed up what seemed useful, then I started the factory settings restore procedure.
Everything went well, but since then, I can no longer surf the internet. I do have an internet connection, but when I try to browse using IE (installed by default), I always get a message: "The security certificate for this website has a problem."
I tried installing Google Chrome, but I still can't browse properly.

What should I do or install to be able to simply browse the internet with this type of PC running Vista?

Thank you.

Hello.

From another PC, download SRware Iron in portable version. It's a .exe file that you save onto a USB stick. Return to the Vista PC. Copy/paste this file into the "Documents" section (for example) then right-click and extract. In the newly created folder, find the application and create a shortcut on the desktop.

https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/iron_portable

This software works from Windows XP to Windows 10.

Thank you Jojo for this information, which I will try.
However, what are the SP1 / SP2 updates?

Hello.

From the same distributor to extract a folder.exe ==>

https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/7-zip_portable

Indeed, this PC, at least its system, will not be easily dominated.
Check in the device manager if there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on the network card. If the fault appears, Kaneagle, whom I greet, will guide you if he wishes and if it is possible, to install a driver.

See you...

Re.

Addition = At the beginning of last week, I upgraded an HP Pavilion dv 9500 laptop from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home without any problems. (+ more than 200 updates)

For a small sum, ==>

https://blitzhandel24.fr/serveur-client/windows/windows-7/270/microsoft-windows-7-home-premium-sp1

Certainly, there are no more updates for Windows 7, but I believe that for the next 2 years you can still use this PC. What happens after that, I don’t know.
After installing Windows 7 and its updates, there’s a possibility to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, but it’s a one in two chance :)

See you...

P.S.: Annoying about this link, it doesn’t work as expected. You need to copy/paste it into a new window.

I have successfully downloaded SRWare as indicated. However, after copying/pasting, I do not have the extract option with the right-click, so I ran it as an administrator.
I can see the application that I sent to the desktop, but upon opening, I immediately get the message: SRWare Iron has stopped working --> close the program.

I also launched Windows Update to do the latest updates, but there too I received another message after 5 seconds: "Windows could not search for updates" with an error code 80244019.

This PC won't let me do anything!!!

Go to Start
In the Search bar
Type --> devmgmt.msc and OK.

Do you have a section --> Other devices?

What do you have in Network adapters?

Brand and model number of the PC?

Best regards Jojolaguitare

Hello,
I downloaded the Zip-portable version again, but after pasting the file into documents, I still can't extract it with a right-click.
If I open the application file, it asks me to choose a folder, but none is valid for extraction (a message every time asking to choose a folder!!).
Could you provide me with a step-by-step explanation?
For your information, I don't have a yellow triangle when I open the device manager for the network card.
So I think, as suggested, I will probably switch to Windows 7 at a lower cost.
I’ll be away on vacation for a week, and I’ll get back to it when I return.
See you!

Hello,
Thank you for this information that I will try to implement soon.
However, I have a question: to reinstall the Realtek wireless device, is the provided disk mandatory? Because I can't find the original backup CD.
See you!

Hello.

There is no need for an installation CD-ROM at all.

It goes without saying that you need another computer on your side to perform the downloads recommended by Kaneagle in message 15, since you do not have Internet access on this PC running Vista. These are .exe files. So first open "7 Zip". If you can't install it on the PC, you have the portable version (in .exe file) ==>

https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/7-zip_portable

However, for the Realtek driver, no problem, it's indeed an .exe file to install after 7 Zip.

See you later...

Good evening,
Kaneagle operations in message 15 were performed today.
After the last restart, I tried to open IE and then Chrome, but I still receive the same security certificate error messages.

Question: how can I be sure that my PC is compatible if I want to install Windows 7 as suggested in message 7?
What should I look for?
Thank you.

Hello.

In general, PCs originally running Vista transition smoothly to Windows 7. ==>

https://www.pcastuces.com/pratique/windows/7/maj_vista_7/page1.htm

Or in video ==>

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Passer+de+Windows+Vista+%C3%A0+Windows+7&docid=607986417885249541&mid=69B5578CCEAE947916A669B5578CCEAE947916A6&view=detail&FORM=VIRE

BE SURE to check your current system architecture, 32 or 64 bits. If your CPU runs on 32 bits, a 64-bit installation will be refused.

For a free ISO of Windows 7 following the activation key that you are going to purchase = Home Premium or Pro.

https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/systemes-d-exploitation/14933-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool/

First download the tool, then use this tool to download the ISO. If you buy the suggested Home Premium key from message 7, it will be the ISO for Windows 7 Home Premium, which is actually the most popular version. You can install Windows 7 and enter the key later, but you only have 3 days.

See you...

Good evening,
I finally bought the Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit version as suggested in message 7.
Installation was done without any problem today by following the instructions from Jojolaguitare in the last message (19).
However, browsing the internet with IE8, which was installed by default, was complicated as several sites did not support this version. So, I installed the latest version of Firefox and was able to browse normally.
We'll see how long I can use it like this......

Thanks again to Jojolaguitare and Kaneagle for your help.
See you soon.

Hello.

You're welcome! And thank you for the feedback . . . For IE8, after the updates (about 200. It takes a whole day), IE 11 will be installed. As mentioned in message 7, I believe you'll be fine for 2 years. Beyond that, some software will detach from Windows 7 as it has with Vista. (For example: Google Chrome). Since you now have a valid Windows 7 key, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. However, there's a 50/50 chance of success. Very old and obsolete drivers may not pass. But nothing stops you from trying, of course. If the installation of Windows 10 fails, you will remain on Windows 7.

Best of luck . . .
