Changing the processor of my ASUS laptop...

Hello!

I'm considering potentially changing the processor of my PC because it limits its capacities during my gaming sessions;

My computer is an ASUS with an Intel Core i5-6200U @ 2.30GHz: so I am considering possibly getting an Intel Core i7-7600U @ 2.80GHz but I'm not sure about its compatibility or if there is a better quality/price option :/ !

So I wanted to know if:
1- The i7 mentioned above is indeed compatible with my laptop;
2- Is there a better option in terms of quality/price?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to your responses :) !

Here are some links to get information about these processors:

Hi,

Assuming that the processor is soldered to the motherboard...

I hope you are very well equipped in terms of hardware to get started...

Then, I hope you have a machine with a well-optimized chassis to cool this new processor and finally, that the machine has sufficient power phases for the processor...

Finally, I hope that the motherboard has a firmware update available to make the 7th generation CPU compatible, which it isn't by default...

In short, good luck with your upgrade...

So if I understand correctly, compatibility-wise everything is fine, but it's only the assembly that might be tricky. I don't think I'm going to risk soldering above my PC's motherboard ^^'... I need to check if the processor is properly soldered to it!

I'll keep this forum open for other ideas, but thank you very much!

So if I understood correctly, everything is fine in terms of compatibility

Basically, you understood nothing at all...

I was saying that we needed to make sure the motherboard was compatible: not sure at all, since it’s a generation change. That we had to check whether the PC could handle the heat produced by this more powerful CPU: not sure either, just like the ability to power it.

Oh okay, the purpose of the topic was actually to find out if the two previous processors were interchangeable :) !

I just forgot to take into account the compatibility between the motherboard and the i7 processor, but since the i7 has the same socket as the i5 (if my research is correct, which I can't guarantee, that's why I'm asking for more info to know if swapping the two processors is possible), it can be placed in place of the i5, right?

Also, I haven't forgotten to take into account the heat, but I specifically need information to compare the heat generated by the i7 compared to the i5! (That way, I'll have an idea of whether this PC can handle the heat or not ^^).

I still need to investigate the power supply part, but that shouldn't be too hard to find...

I only have a few notions in this field, please excuse me if I don't understand everything ;) !

He can replace the i5, can't he?

Not necessarily. Besides the socket (which is likely soldered), there's also the required power supply, and there's also the heat that must be managed, so a system that's suitable for the processor is needed. On top of that, the chipset must also recognize the processor. On a desktop, a BIOS update can allow this, but on a laptop, it's not always the case.

Ahhh thank you very much, I see! This might be complicated then, for sure ^^'...

I think I will have to find another way to boost my processor, but being locked, I don't think there's any way to overclock it (which is a bad idea on a laptop anyway...), in any case, thanks again, and I will have to continue my research!

Should I close the topic?
