Installing Windows XP instead of Windows 10

Hello,

I wanted to install Windows XP instead of Windows 10 on my Asus Vivobook Pro 17 laptop.

I followed the procedure to uninstall Windows 10 and tried to launch Windows XP from an original CD (external drive).

Impossible. The drive is not detected, either at the boot level or in the BIOS.

I had tried the same thing before uninstalling Windows 10, and in that case, the disk started on the screen, but the "install" option was grayed out.

Is there something in Windows or Asus that prevents the installation of an older version?

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

Leopardi

Software is easier to upgrade than hardware

But when the hardware is too old, there's no choice but to upgrade it.

The problem is on the software side with XP, the browser is too old, and like it or not, the new hardware is unknown to XP.

If you can upgrade to the latest version of Firefox in ESR version, maybe you won't have this problem anymore.

Hello,

Potentially a lot of issues. XP does not handle UEFI boot, and to install on a SATA disk, you needed to provide a floppy disk with the SATA driver.

Moreover, there is a good chance that XP will not be able to manage a machine with current components, and that the drivers do not exist.

So it's a bad idea to start such an installation.

To use XP, the best solution is to use a virtual machine on W10 (Hyper-V, VirtualBox, or VMware).

Sincerely,

Ok. Thank you for your quick reply.

Is that your final word (Jean-Pierre)?

Is it the same for installing W7?

no, me "I was born in the street"

W7 there is much more chance, you just need to check the drivers on the asus website

I had tried with the original W7 disc. It starts up but crashes miserably on the black installation screen...

Hi,

No, it was like trying to put coal to heat a coal boiler in an electric car.

Windows XP contains all the drivers you need

...for components and peripherals from 20 years ago.

Well, it's dead. I guess I'll just have to buy a 20-year-old laptop? (at least 44 lbs!)

no, I had a great Dell D430, 1.5kg and there was a Dell X1 1.14kg back in .... 2005

In fact, I was given an old laptop with XP but it doesn't have Wi-Fi. I plugged in a Wi-Fi USB key that worked with my desktop. The Wi-Fi connects, and I can do a Google search.
However, I can't get past the results page. Whenever I click on one of the search results, I get a "no connection" page. DNS problem or something like that.

I also haven't been able to connect it via Ethernet.

Could I ask for your help with this as well?

Thank you very much.

the problem now also comes from browsers, those on XP do not support all current websites

IE should be forgotten

and honestly, I repeat, a virtual machine on a W10 is ideal.

Hello,
we are back to the same problem:
not only can Windows XP not manage current or recent hardware, but it also cannot handle current software...
Even if you find the drivers to make your hardware work, the software won't follow, and you won't have all the functionalities, even just to properly display a website.

On top of that, you will have an operating system open to all possible and unimaginable vulnerabilities; I’m talking about security and the fact that XP is open to any intrusion. Without specific skills, anyone could access your computer and take control over the network... let's add all the viruses and other malware, and you'll have a computer that will never hold up and will be a gateway to problems and unsafe.
This is actually what led to the end of Windows XP... the fact that it is not suited for networks and the advent of the Internet.

This is also what it means for a program to no longer be maintained or updated. With technologies (and hardware) evolving without updates, it's simply not viable... at least not to fully operate a program and its updates, for example, a web browser that allows for displaying web pages.

After all, the question remains: why do you need this operating system?
I understand that Windows 10 does not satisfy you, but by spending some time uninstalling and removing everything cloud-related and other applications that intrusively track your movements, it is possible.
In any case, W10 remains the most reliable and functional of Microsoft's current OS. Vista and 7 not being maintained means that they potentially have security vulnerabilities and will not be able to run certain programs since the necessary updates will not be possible.

Of course, this is also a method for manufacturers to sell their latest version.
If that bothers you, switch to Linux, which is also free in its mainstream distributions.

First of all, thank you for your detailed response.
Often we want to hear what we don't want to hear.
Anyway, I fear you are right.
However, I am a big sentimental and I find the W10 environment and its colors horrible and unaesthetic compared to WXP. Furthermore, I find it unbearable to be forced to upgrade when a tool works well.
I think I will try virtual. That way, it will remain a dream...
Thank you.

I’d like to try, but if I don’t have the internet at the start, how can I do that? Is there a link to download it onto a USB key?

I still have an old PC in a corner to play Wolfenstein 3D

Apart from that, there's nothing interesting with XP that can't be done with a recent Windows.

Except for the old games or programs like I mentioned.

There are games, certain software (my version of Powerdirector), and also an environment that I am attached to in relation to W10 that I find awful.

fabul Posted messages 42099 Registration date   Status Modérateur Last intervention   6 035

You use Windows not for the environment, but for the programs and what you do on it.

You can surely use PowerDirector with Windows 10.

Otherwise, what is the error message?

leopardi Posted messages 25 Status Membre

The playback window doesn't work in real time. I reported it to the Powerdirector hotline, who told me that my version wasn't compatible with Windows 10 and that I needed to buy their latest version.

It's the last drop of O.S. (laughs) that made the vase overflow and motivated my attempt to return to XP.

Sometimes you get quick answers to make you buy their latest version of the program.

Less complicated than releasing a patch that no longer pays.

Maybe, but I'm not an expert. So...

Thanks anyway.

Even Windows 7, I've seen recent programs (several) that are no longer compatible.

I switched to Win10 last summer, voluntarily, and bought Retail licenses on eBay for my PCs.

One major problem was solved, along with some minor issues with software.

As for the major problem, my Nvidia EVGA GTX 780 Superclocked used to crash doing nothing with drivers newer than 347.52.

Now I'm on driver 432.00 from the Microsoft catalog, and I've had no issues.

One example of why I prefer Win10 too, there's no need to click in the explorer window on the left to scroll up and down with the mouse wheel, just hover over it.
