USB drive issue

Question

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my USB drive; I can no longer access it. When I insert it into my PC, there’s a sound like when it's plugged in and I see the small image of the USB drive in the taskbar. But when I go to File Explorer, I can’t find the drive. I’ve already tried changing the drive letter, but that didn't work. In Disk Management, the drive is present but is labeled as "removable disk" and it says there is no media. I should mention that I’m using Windows 10.

Hi,  Update your USB controller driver with Toulesdrivers or DriversCloud to see if that resolves the issue.

It might be the key that has faulty firmware, we can try something.

Download ChipGenius, run it, and check if it displays the correct device information in the window. Then right-click in the window, and copy here (Text), so we can see what controller it is, if possible.

And try to flash it using that tool.

If the issue is indeed the firmware of the key (from the controller), it should theoretically fix it.

Hello,

Thank you very much for this link.. I am a computer scientist and I had never played with the firmware of a USB key. I was exactly in the same problem as the author of the post. I downloaded the software: iTe_MpTools_20180103_8T23 (the 2016 version is only in Russian or Chinese.. So use the 2018 one that offers English) from the site provided by fabul and it detected the key and suggested a "SCAN" -> With an error of "lock failure".

However.. When you click on SCAN it takes a certain amount of time.. Then the key becomes visible again but empty. Given the time, I suspect that the software is performing a low-level format of the key.. This would explain why my file recovery software found absolutely nothing (not even one file...).

So if, like me, the main goal is to recover the files on the USB key... Don't do "scan" but find another tool that allows access to the key without reformatting it.. (I suppose that the firmware update can be done without formatting the key, right?).

Anyway.. be careful because a key costs 10 bucks but the files on it can be worth much more.
