Hello,

Having a lot of trouble finding a good free data recovery software, I am considering a paid one.

I found Easeus Data Recovery Wizard. It seems good to me.

Does anyone have an opinion on it?

Hello,
For free and very efficient but a bit austere, there is Photorec/testdisk

Hello,

Thank you for your help.

I downloaded Photorec and tested it with an unreadable USB key.

It was great because I was able to recover many files, even though I don't know exactly what percentage I recovered since I didn't know precisely how many files were originally on my USB key.

Unfortunately, there is a big problem I hadn't considered: all the files and directories have lost their original names, and the creation date of the files and directories has also disappeared.

Is this drawback specific to this software, or will every data recovery software, whatever it may be, cause the names and creation dates of files and directories to disappear?

Apparently not, because when analyzing this USB key with Easeus Data Recovery Wizard, the names of the files and directories appeared.

Your key should have been in RAW.
Photorec/testdisk recovers everything, even files that you had intentionally deleted; sometimes they are unreadable because they are incomplete and therefore corrupted. As for the Easeus software, it's the same; see this page, everything is indicated https://www.easeus.fr/tutoriel/data-recovery-wizard-free-manuel.html. In my opinion, it won't perform better than Testdisk/Photorec.
Notes
RAW Files: The files found by RAW recovery. These files will no longer have their original names/directories and will receive an assigned name. You will need to manually check these files to rename and organize them.

Tag: Although the found RAW files do not retain their original name/path, the product will extract other tag information for easier identification. These tags include document editor, music artist, camera information for photos/videos, etc. Photos, videos, music, PDF files, and MS Office files will be included in this section.

Hello,

I understood your explanations, but there is still something that puzzles me.

How do you explain the fact that I was able to see the names of my files and folders on the problematic drive with Easeus Data Recovery Wizard?

Recovering RAW files does not retain this information, as the file must be rebuilt for it to be readable on Windows.

If I understand you correctly, no matter what type of data recovery software I use, whether paid or free, none of them will restore my files and folders with their original names and creation dates?
