Updating a rooted phone

Hello everyone,

Some time ago, for various useful reasons, I rooted my phone (Xiaomi Redmi Note 7).
Several times, I have been notified about the possibility of updating the phone. Although I don't know the exact details of the changes related to these updates, I wanted to install them, if only in case they might address software vulnerabilities.
Installation failed, which I have no doubt is due to the fact that my phone is rooted.

What is the next step to upgrade my phone? I've heard about "custom ROMs," but I haven't quite understood if that is what I am looking for or just a customization (as the name suggests) of the phone.
Will these ROMs or other ways to upgrade the smartphone require a reset of all data, like when I rooted the phone? That would be very unfortunate.

Thank you in advance for any help.

PS:
Current Android version 9 PKQ1.180904.001,
Global MIUI version 10.3 | Stable 10.3.5.0(PFGMIXM)
Proposed update (which I cannot install as it is) MIUI V10.3.6.0 PFGMIXM | Stable 1.7G

    Hi,
It's normal not to be able to update with a rooted device. However, I'm not so sure if these are OTA updates...

Custom ROMs are modified versions of the operating system compared to what the manufacturer offers. Generally, we only use them for very specific needs or to fix major bugs/software imperfections not addressed by the standard updates provided by the manufacturer.

It's complicated for a non-initiated person and potentially dangerous if done incorrectly. Moreover, a custom ROM doesn't necessarily provide ongoing support, and sometimes it introduces more bugs than it fixes.

To force updates with a rooted device, there are several solutions.
It's possible to use software to control the phone from a PC, which allows you to force updates.
For Samsung, for example, it's the Smart Switch software. For your brand, I don't know if such a thing exists, and I haven't looked it up.

It’s also sometimes possible to do updates at the phone's startup by installing them from a microSD card through recovery mode.

And there are probably other methods, maybe through ADB directly... I can't remember, it's been a while since I had to update a rooted Android. With the evolution of Android versions that continuously bring more features, rooting is losing its appeal over time.
