Hello everyone,
I need your help because I would like to play online (via the internet) with a friend on Age of Empires 2, but we can't manage to do so despite numerous and laborious attempts...
I will thus ask you my questions in the order they come up during an attempt:
1) Is it a problem to be on automatic IP for playing online? My computer is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. My friend’s computer is connected via an Ethernet cable.
2) Should we choose the option: "Internet TCP/IP for DirectPlay" or "IPX for DirectPlay" (my friend doesn't have the "IPX for DirectPlay" option, even though it's the same game???!!)
3) Is the IP address that needs to be entered by the person joining the created game the IP address of the computer obtained by going to a site (like http://www.interpc.fr/ip.asp) or is it the IP of the connection (of the type 192.168.X.X)?
The problem is that it's impossible to see the game created by the other even when entering the correct IP addresses...
Thank you in advance for your clarifications; we've been struggling with this for almost a week now!!

Hi,
You just need to install a small program on both computers. It's great and emulates a local network (so you can play in LAN)
Hamachi: https://www.vpn.net
For any other questions: http://ww38.planethamachi.com/
Don't forget to change your question to resolved if this allows you to play with your friend :)

Hi,
So here are the ports you need to open:
47624 TCP
2300-2400 TCP
2300-2400 UDP
To do this, you need to go to your router by typing its address (often 192.168.1.1)
Tutorial here for Neuf: http://www.justneuf.com/wiki/index.php/Comment_ouvrir_un_port_sur_la_Neuf_Box_4
And for the Livebox:
LAN Server tab
Add
Name: AOEmpire
Access: Yes
Protocol: TCP
From port: 47624 to port: 47624
Apply
Repeat the operation for the other 2 ports.
Also, disable your Windows firewall. It’s really annoying for this. Or follow this tutorial:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308127/fr
There you go, you should have everything there hehe good luck! :)

Hehe yes!
It's progress, personally I use Hamachi and I can't count how many good times I would have missed without it. Once it works, it’s great!
So, since the ports are open now and it still doesn't work, you need to check that you're using the same version of Hamachi and that you're both on the same operating system. I discovered this this weekend; if one of us was on VISTA, certain issues would arise. But don't worry, it's nothing too serious :)
See you soon.

Excuse me, could I ask a question about the port configuration? Is the requested IP address that of Hamachi?
-
Hello,
In the port configuration, the requested IP address is the one assigned to you by your router. You can see it by typing ipconfig in a command prompt window; (to open a command prompt, type Command or cmd in Start->Run)
Good luck

Hi,
So? Result? If it's resolved, I would kindly ask you to confirm it and change the status of your question. I like to have green points in my contributions :) Thank you

Okay, as soon as I try I’ll change my status, it will be done before the end of the weekend. A little patience for your green points lol!! In any case, thanks to everyone for your help, this forum is really active!!!

Well, here it is, I tried doing everything you told me. I'm on a live box via Wi-Fi, I opened the ports and disabled the firewall. I think the problem is still Hamachi: the ping test always says "request timed out." So then there's no way to see each other on LAN!
I can't give you your green points yet, sorry.
It annoys me that it's so complicated, is this progress???? -
Hello,
I had the same problem and I used hamachimachin: complete miracle, it works!

Is there a way for two people to play Age of Empires 2 for free online? (Both computers have separate internet connections and each computer has the game installed, of course.)
-
Is no one currently playing AOE II online???? Please help me....
-
Thank you for your help, Luc, but can we use Tribalweb to create a virtual local network of this kind? Otherwise, we'll try Hamachi; I hope it's not too complicated. In any case, it seems secure in terms of safety.
-
Here we installed Hamachi on both computers. I created a server, she joined, but when I do the 'ping' test, it tells me that the timeout is exceeded on every attempt...
We still tried to play Age of Empires 2. We leave Hamachi open, we are both on the network. I choose local network LAN as the multiplayer option at the beginning. I create the game. My friend tries to join me always choosing the LAN option, but my game does not appear???
What to do, the problem comes from Hamachi, right? -
My friend is connected via Ethernet, but I'm on Wi-Fi. Maybe the Wi-Fi is messing up Hamachi? If that's the case, is there a Plan B?
-
You are connected to Wi-Fi, that's true, but to what? A Livebox? If so, I can help you. I had the same problem; actually, you need to open some ports in there. I was able to create the parts, but others couldn't join. I'm waiting for your response so I can help you :p
-
thank you sk_drille. yes, it's a livebox (well, on weekends, because the rest of the time it's through a neufbox).
so I have to open ports to make Himachi work? is it just me (the one who creates the game and is on wifi) who needs to open a port on the livebox? which one? thanks for your help... -
didn't have time to post the port openings, but I hope it will help you at least :p I'm off to AOE 2
-
Sure, looking forward to helping you again.
(Would it be possible to change the status of the question, please?)

Me, it works perfectly, you just need to install Hanamichi, then create a game and tell people to connect to the network... TCP/IP connection for direct play (the person who created Hanamichi creates the network game) you enter the IP of Hanamichi (5.Xx.XXX.XX) in the game.
