Bonjour, I would like to know if it is possible to set a password to protect our text files in Notepad without specifically installing software. Thank you.

Hello,
The .docx (Microsoft Word) and .odt (LibreOffice Writer) formats can be password-protected at the time of saving.
Otherwise, for plain text, you can simply place your text in an encrypted archive. If you do not wish to install software, many PCs come with archive managers like WinRAR, WinZip, or 7-Zip.

Thank you for responding, I'm talking about a text file from Notepad, so in .txt.
How can I encrypt my text file with WinRAR?

Yes by specifying a password at the time of the archive creation.

Hello,

EDIT:
Otherwise, with the software "7 Zip" by including a password for opening the file...

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I don't want to encrypt a folder, just a .txt Notepad document. I'd rather stick with WinRAR; I don't want to install 7-Zip. I'll find a way to encrypt my text document using WinRAR. Thank you.

OK,
But WinRAR is more invasive and moreover it is not free.

how is that more invasive? It's true that it's not free, but even at the end of the trial period, you can use the software without paying. I already have the software on my computer, but thanks for the link.

The Notepad does not have an encryption function. The only solution for .txt files is the secure archive. For your information, 7zip and Winrar are exactly the same type of software, archive managers. Winrar is a bit of an oddity among Windows software; it is supposed to be paid after a trial period, but that part doesn't work, and you can still use Winrar and all its features even after the trial period ends. It's a mystery! No one pays for Winrar!

Yes, I myself do not pay for WinRAR. I don't want to install 7zip because I know it's the same type of software as WinRAR, so it's not very useful.
