Set a file to application/octet-stream

Hello, I have a problem. I've been trying for several weeks to apply for a job at McDonald's, but the issue is that when I get to the point where I need to attach my CV and cover letter, I'm told "Please correct the following errors:
The file is not of an authorized type (application/octet-stream). If the file is being modified, please close it before sending." I don't know how to proceed, can you please help me?

Configuration: Windows XP / Internet Explorer 7.0

    What format are your cover letter and CV in?
