Hello everyone,

Temporarily, I would like to use the 4G from a mobile phone as a modem to connect to the Internet on my PC from a house where there is no installed access. However, I was wondering how many GB I should pay for each month for my usage, namely: at most a few hours of Netflix or YouTube per day (let's say 4 hours, a wide range) and several hours of internet browsing (let's say 4 hours as well)? I am particularly addressing those who have already tried using their phone for this purpose. I am considering getting a RED plan with 100 GB/month for around twenty euros. What do you think?

Hi

The easiest thing would be to find a friend or family member with a Freebox plan. Indeed, Freebox holders have 4 discounts for telephony plans, and with this discount, 4G data is unlimited. If you know someone with a Freebox who is not using their 4 discounts, jump at the chance; it's the most interesting option at the moment.

Hi,
I think you should cut back on your consumption compared to what you plan, especially with TV; 1 hour a day would be more reasonable.
But hey, give it a try for about ten days and check on your mobile or with your provider how much you've consumed, then you can adjust, it's not that complicated.
Basically, you can track your nonsense consumption day by day.

I don't thank you for your judgments or implications about my consumption of crap, but who are you to judge my internet usage? You think I should reduce my consumption, but who are you to give your opinion on my internet consumption?
I didn’t come to this forum to be judged; should I report you for this attitude?
I must not have been clear from the start: in this message, I’m not asking for an opinion on my usage; I'm asking internet users for their experiences regarding THEIR consumption, so I can choose the subscription that I personally take into account considering my needs. I see no feedback on your personal experience in your message, no mention of Go, and only judgment.
If this is "just" your way of expressing yourself, I would like to remind you that I am not your "buddy." I think you could show me a minimum of respect in your expression; and I’m sorry if by this expectation I’m asking too much from you. ANYWAY, to respond to the content of your message: I already know that by gradually testing my consumption, I will have an answer on the number of Go needed! That’s not the question: I’m actually trying to anticipate it. Your message doesn’t help me at all...

So I’m allowing myself to rephrase the first message, in case I didn't express my request clearly: I would like to know how many Go people consume who use their phone as a modem for their computer, and whose internet usage reaches 8 hours daily in browsing/video.

If you, brupala, have no experience in this field that could shed light on my question, your intervention does not bring me anything... Thank you anyway for having wasted your time on my "problem," even if you obviously are not very concerned about helping me. Best regards!

personally I do not use internet TV and I even lament its existence when I read elsewhere that this junk uses more than half of the global network without paying for it.
My disdain for this usage is therefore not directed at you but against this practice that should disappear in the years to come.
Indeed, it is very easy for you to make your own measurements and the experiences of others do not help at all in this area.
Finally,
yes, I insist and I drive the point home:
TV isolates and makes the brain useless, a minimal usage is therefore advised.

It is indeed easy for me to measure things myself, but don't be mistaken: the experience of others is useful to me, as it allows me to anticipate the amount of GB I "might" need, and to choose my subscription accordingly. It is nothing more than anticipation. In this sense, I do not think it is for you to decide whether the experience of others helps me or not. Are you only talking about TV because I mentioned Netflix? You know nothing about my internet usage; you are unaware if the goal is to occupy my free time or if it is a tool for my work; you were therefore not in a position to express any opinion on the matter. I can tell you, since everyone uses the informal "you" here, it's been the custom for 20 years, that I always try to get to the heart of what people are really looking for by pushing the limits of their questioning, it's my method.
With you, I am not disappointed and I congratulate you on your beautiful writing, which is unfortunately not so common.
Where you are mistaken,
is in your anticipation story:
today, almost all mobile plans, especially those without service like RED, are without commitment and can be canceled anytime, the only cost is that of the SIM card to be repaid each time.
So,
if a better offer than the one you choose comes along, nothing stops you from changing immediately.
Opportunists do not hesitate to jump from one offer to another, at least if they usually find themselves in a well-covered area, which is not always the case with Free, for PierreCastor.

Hello,

In my case, 4G consumption over a week:

- News at noon and evening, one movie, say one evening a week
- "Normal" surfing: emails, forums, a bit of YouTube

Total duration per day: about 3 hours.

In total: 10 to 15 GB.

In my opinion, for 8 hours a day including 4 of Netflix, 100 GB might be a bit tight. It all really depends on the distribution of your activity.

Perfect, thank you for your feedback! It gives me a little idea. There are two of us using it, hence the 8 hours/day. Which provider are you with for how much €/month, if it’s not too personal? Considering your own usage, I think it would be good to go for 100 GB and adjust throughout the month (the 8 hours is a high estimate; we won’t be using the Internet every day). I am with RED by SFR at €22 per month for 30GB.

The idea of getting 100GB and adjusting it day by day based on consumption seems excellent to me.

Ok, great! I read on RED's website that they offer 100 GB for €20 per month, I think I will choose this plan. Maybe at the end of summer, I will come back to share feedback so that the users who come here also have an idea of what has worked for my usage. Great, thanks again for the help!

I don't know if you were able to read my message number 5?

Especially since I would advise against SFR; since the acquisition, they have become one of the operators with the most complaints, far ahead of the others. Not to mention their dishonest techniques to re-engage users or prevent them from cancelling.

I just replied to you! :-) I'm already on RED on one of my phones and other close friends as well, we haven't had any issues so far. I can't find an alternative to get as many GB (I'll check for the Freebox but I'm almost sure I don't have anyone with that provider).

I see that we are talking about packages and operators, but what about the network coverage of these different wave merchants?

In this case, given the usage, the only coverage that will interest us is that of KV's home.

But it's an interesting question to raise. Testing with different operators can provide additional facts for making a choice.

I thought about it. The place where I will need network coverage has a relay antenna relatively close by according to what the site "antennes mobile.fr" indicates: SFR, Orange, Free, and Bouygues cover the area. But after that, I don't know enough to determine the quality of the coverage...

The quality of coverage can be seen on site; it doesn't exist on paper.
Especially in 4G where there are 4 frequency bands with very variable propagation:
700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2600 MHz.
Not every operator necessarily offers them all in the same location, and Free does not have frequencies at 800 MHz, and not all mobile phones support 700 MHz.

It's definitely an interesting observation. It would be wise to gather a few friends with different operators and conduct a speed test for each of them to see what the situation is.
Just beware, the speed test gives a snapshot at a given moment, which doesn't mean the network won't be better or worse under different circumstances.

In my case, when I travel during July/August, regardless of the operator, the network is completely unusable (beach resort), even though operators swear up and down that it's not their fault...

Also something to consider... Seasonal variation, when it gets to us...
