Hello!
Recently, my good old hard drive started to fail, accompanied by a piercing noise and freezing on top of that! Thinking it was the hard drive, I bought a new one, and all my problems were solved!
... or so I thought, because two weeks after the installation, while playing VRChat, I hear a screeching sound, a wave of stress hits me, but I calm down. A few days later, I hear it again, and for the past two days, it's been happening more frequently. You can imagine the Vietnam images in computer version!
Anyway, this sound often occurs during gaming or on Firefox; I have the impression it’s linked to the use of the computer. Moreover, the sound seems to come from the motherboard, or the graphics card, although I doubt the latter can emit sound. If I had to describe the sound, I would say it’s a brief “screech” lasting half a second, it’s quite audible, and when it happens, the screen freezes for about 3 seconds, and then everything goes back to normal, until it reappears! I’ve noticed with the task manager that after it happens, disk usage spikes to 100%, then drops back to the usual range of 0 to 10%.
I was actually informed that before changing the hard drive, the motherboard needs to be reset, which I didn’t do, and then reinstall the OS, but I'm not sure that's the issue...
I’ve also checked, and I have indeed installed the latest drivers.
I’m having trouble figuring out where this could be coming from, and that's why I'm here pleading for your help. I’ve searched everywhere on the internet, but I haven’t found anything comparable. If you have any idea about the cause/solution, or any advice, please let me know x)
Here are the specs of the PC:
GPU: ASUS GTX 1060 3GB
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70 GHz
RAM: 8GB
Running Windows 10 Professional 64-bit
600W Power Supply
Motherboard: Asus B150m-Plus D3 (if I'm not mistaken ^^)

So I changed the SATA port on the motherboard, and I realized that the port where the hard drive was connected was literally under the graphics card! So I changed to another SATA port, one that is safely away from any graphics card that could crush it, and I have no more problems! Thank you immensely for your help, I was totally lost to be honest x)
Have a great day!
Small problem analysis tip if you have other issues like this:
- Check the connectivity (loose cable, etc...)
- Change the input or output (in your case, SATA port)
- Change the connector cable
- Change the output component
- Change the input component (if it's the motherboard, it can be more complicated)
P.S.: I've learned everything through mistakes on my poor desktop PC. A lot of things can be solved with good analytical reasoning, whether it's in computer hardware or any project.
Best regards,
Dani
