Hello,

When connecting my external hard drive, it is no longer recognized by the laptop.
I started a CHKDSK, which has been running for over an hour, seemingly stuck at 1% of the 4th verification step.

Here is the log, so far:

Microsoft Windows [version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\PC>CHKDSK /F /R H:
The file system type is NTFS.
The volume name is PIERRE Little Disk.

Step 1: Examining the basic file system structure...

51184 file records processed.

File verification is complete.

2 large file records processed.

0 bad file records processed.

Step 2: Examining file name linking...

52966 index entries processed.

Index verification is complete.

0 unindexed files scanned.

0 unindexed files recovered.

Step 3: Examining security descriptors...
Security descriptor verification is complete.

892 data files processed.
CHKDSK is verifying the USN journal...

27379600 USN bytes processed.

USN journal verification is complete.

Step 4: Looking for bad clusters in user file data...
Progress status: 831 of 51168 processed; Step: 1%; Total: 22%; Estimated completion time: 3:06:19..

I'm wondering if it's relevant to stop this verification; if so, how. Can you advise me?

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Hello,
Forget CHKDSK, there's a faster way to test your hard drive with CrystalDiskInfo. Use the following color codes to interpret the results, click on the image to enlarge it:

Hello! Thank you for the quick response!
Finally, after 3 hours and 30 minutes, the check disk finished with this diagnosis:

Step 4: Searching for bad clusters in user file data...

51168 files processed.

File data verification is complete.

Step 5: Searching for bad free clusters...

45217127 free clusters processed.

Free space verification is complete.
Damaged clusters are replaced in the log file.
Adding 8 bad clusters to the bad cluster file.
Correcting errors in the volume bitmap.

Windows has made corrections to the file system.
No further action is required.

488384000 KB of total disk space.
307350288 KB in 9887 files.
5920 KB in 893 indexes.
32 KB in bad sectors.
159280 KB used by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
180868480 KB available on the disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
122096000 allocation units total on the disk.
45217120 allocation units available on the disk.

C:\Users\PC>C

My disk seems to be accessible again.
Can you advise me on the viability of the media? The files deemed bad only total 32 KB, which seems quite insignificant to me.
Would you advise me to continue using this disk or should I consider it unreliable?
Thank you!

Hello Pierre,

The CrystalDisk Info report suggested by bazfile is the next step to take, so if you want additional assistance it's better to follow this advice.

Best regards,
