Hello, since yesterday I have no sound on my Mac (except for the startup chime). In System Preferences - Sound - the Internal Speakers option does not appear in the Output window. It is grayed out with a prohibition sign. The same goes for the Audio and MIDI Setup.

I installed the new update, plus I restored my Mac, and I fiddled with the jack with a toothpick, but the problem remains.

Model name: iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) Model identifier: iMac14,1
Processor name: Intel Core i5
Processor speed: 2.7 GHz
Number of processors: 1
Total number of cores: 4
Level 2 cache (per core): 256 KB
Level 3 cache: 4 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Boot ROM version: 133.0.0.0.0

Thank you

Happy New Year to you.

Hello,

You can try these two operations:
Resetting the NVRAM:
Locate the following 4 keys: Alt (⌥) - Cmd (⌘) - P - R
Restart the Mac: Apple menu () then "Restart"
Press and hold the 4 keys Alt (⌥) - Cmd (⌘) - P - R simultaneously (note that on older Apple keyboards, the Cmd key is represented by the Apple )
Keep these 4 keys pressed until the 4th 'boing' (sound at startup).
Release these 4 keys
Let the Mac start up.

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
While the NVRAM still exists on Intel Macs, most essential functions are now managed at the SMC level, which handles the following according to Apple:
- Power button response
- Response to opening and closing the lid of a Mac laptop
- Battery management
- Thermal management
- Sudden motion sensor
- Ambient light sensor
- Keyboard backlighting
- Status indicator management
- Battery status indicators
- Selection of an external video source (instead of an internal source) for certain iMac displays

If there are issues with any of these functions, resetting the SMC may resolve it.
Note: This operation is completely safe.

There are three methods to reset it depending on the Mac model:
- On a desktop Mac, you need to turn it off, unplug the power cord, wait 15 seconds (at least), press the power button for 5 seconds (at least). Then, plug the power cord back in, wait 5 seconds (at least) and start the Mac

- On a portable Mac with a removable battery, you need to turn it off, unplug the MagSafe adapter, remove the battery, press the power button for 5 seconds, then reinsert the battery, plug the MagSafe adapter back in, and start the Mac.

- On a portable Mac with a <strong>non-removable battery, you need to turn it off, unplug the MagSafe adapter, then simultaneously press the 3 keys (the left ones) Shift, Ctrl, Alt (⌥) AND the power button. Hold these 3 keys and the power button down for at least 10 seconds and then release them all at the same time. You can then start the Mac.

Hello,

Good evening,

Even though this post was made a long time ago, it just helped me out!!! I was starting to get headaches... My 8-month-old daughter had played with the keys on the keyboard...

I performed the first reset method of the PRAM, I didn't believe it would work, thank you very much.

Thank you Ritchi
