INTERNATIONAL DVD/VCR Combo model: ON98P

Hello,

I have the same DVD/VCR combo from INTERNATIONAL model number: ON98P and when I press the power button, nothing happens!
(It should be noted that it no longer displays anything on the function LCD, so I suspect a power failure, but the fuse on the power supply is good! Has anyone had this problem and could give me some guidance?)

    Given the price of DVD players and the current uselessness of a VCR, buying a new one will be more cost-effective

    Andy, my question is technical, as I have been interested in electronics and computing for a long time!

    Your answer therefore does not provide a solution or interest, especially since your evaluation regarding the purchase of a new DVD and VCR combo seems off-topic (I don't want to spend 150 to 200 euros on a new one).

      You won't find a VCR, production has stopped, and a DVD player costs €40.

    The advantage of a combo device is precisely to be able to read CDs, DVDs, or cassettes!
    And since production has stopped according to you, then let others help me fix mine ;) (since you aren't solving anything..)

    Andy is not wrong in what he writes ;-)

    The causes can be multiple, either the transformer that is dead, or a capacitor that has failed, or a faulty ribbon of wires, or even a micro cut on a trace of the circuit board, in short, there is plenty to keep you occupied and before finding the fault...

      Hi Stargate, (regarding Andy31200's opinion)

      If I had needed advice for a potential equipment change, I wouldn't have come here ;) And if Andy thinks it's better to buy a new device than to repair it, it's probably because he can afford to do it and doesn't want to deal with repairs! That concerns him only and has nothing to do with my request! Hence my negative response!

      As for your reply, I thank you, and I already have a rough idea of where to look (hence my precision regarding the power supply), but I was looking for someone here who has already repaired this type of device and might have a more precise repair lead so that I don't waste too much time unnecessarily!

      But thank you anyway for your response, which at least has the merit of
      being about a repair (therefore directly related to my request)

      andy, I'm sorry if you take it the wrong way, but my question was specifically about a repair! Your opinion on a potential equipment change was not the subject, and even though I know that prices for equipment have dropped significantly, I have no intention of investing in new gear! (Otherwise, I wouldn't even have come to this forum to ask a troubleshooting question!)
      As for volunteering, I did it for 11 years in a 1901 law association and believe me, I didn't spare my hours! So I know the field and its difficulties! But just think about the future and respond more pertinently to a question and not off to the side ;)

      No problem.

      I can tell you that you might struggle before finding the fault; it might simply be the transformer that is no longer converting anything (cracked insulation on the windings and assured short circuit, for example), if there's still any in this equipment, it could be the rectifier (which converts alternating current to direct current) that has failed, and it could also stem from one or more capacitors (sometimes visible to the eye → swollen), as mentioned earlier, a trace on the printed circuit board where there could be micro-cuts caused by time, it’s not eternal, it could also come from the secondary printed circuits...

      In short, it’s not easy to guide you since there are so many possibilities...

      I have repaired many devices of this kind, whether they are DVD/VHS combos, VCRs, DVD players, or even vinyl turntables with built-in amplification, but back then it was easier to operate because the components weren't yet miniaturized like they are now.

      I also own a Toshiba SD-24VE DVD/VHS combo that still works, but the day it gives up on me for one reason or another, I'm not sure I would try to fix it, whether at the electronic level or the mechanical level.

    After searching, I just found the power supply schema and very useful information here:

    For R 806, it is a 100 K! (apparently it's good)
    They say to be careful with R803 and R804 but especially with the power transistor 2sc5027, which I measured and seemed fine, but it is advised to replace it with a 2sc3457, which I will try! I will come back to give you an update...

    I’m getting back to you after receiving the transistors I ordered from Asia in order to repair this ON98P device from International!

    The issue was indeed related to the Transistor Q801 (model 2SC 5027). After replacing it, the device restarted without any problems!

    So as you can see, Andy, it was worth trying the repair and saving between 200 and 300 euros to avoid buying another device. ;)

    Note that I ordered batches of 2SC5027 and 2SC3150 transistors with the aim of being able to repair power supplies for TVs or devices of this kind (and maybe also some computer power supplies that often have transistors that fail).
    I found a website where the batches of 10 pieces each were priced at around a dozen euros, shipping included! That said, in the batch of 2SC3150 during testing, there were five transistors that had a gain close to one or zero (which leads me to believe they were defective or not far from being so!), and I will be requesting a partial refund!

    But no issues of this kind for the 2SC5027! (gains between 20 and 25)

    So a big thank you again to the contributors of CCM and Abcelectronique!

    A pleasure if this has been useful to you! And if you need spare parts, just let me know, because I bought a lot from a repair workshop some time ago and I have a nice little stock lol (but I didn't have the 2sc5027 transistors nor the 2sc 3150 which is close but a bit stronger than the 5027)
