Cutting and hollowing out an image

Hello everyone,

I have an image in which a pattern interests me, let's say a donut, but while I know how to cut my donut using the clipping mask, I don't know how to get rid of the central part of my pastry.

With the pen tool, I've traced the contours of the central part well, but when I then go to Pathfinder > Subtract, not only does my donut not get hollowed out, but everything else in the image that I had removed during my first operation, when I cut my donut, reappears.

Do you know how to proceed?

    Try to create a clipping mask with a right click (although on MAC the command may be different).

      This allows you to place an image into a shape.. The shape acts as a mask.
      (the pathfinder is for the surfaces)

      In your case, you first create the shape of your donuts with the Pathfinder (to hollow out the center) and then you apply the clipping mask.
