Create .ico on a white background, it turns to a black background when used

Hello, sorry for the title but there aren't enough characters available.
I want to create .ico files with Paint to customize some folders.
So I open Paint, paste my image, resize it to 512*512, put it on a white background as I want, and save it as bmp (carefully choosing Bitmap 256 colors (*bmp, *dib).
I go to the folder where I saved it, right-click it, and change the extension from bmp to ico; it remains on a white background, perfect.
I go to the folder I want to modify, right-click -> properties -> customize tab -> change icon (I browse my folders to find my freshly created ico, and then, it's the drama; the nice white background has disappeared, it has turned black. I try it anyway just in case, but no, it remains desperately black.
I would like to know why it changes color without warning and how to fix it? Please.
I tried with Gimp but I get the same result.
I'm on Windows 7 64 bits.

Hello,
Have you tried saving in a format other than .bmp?
Usually, you should save/export as .ico...
That way, you can create a pack of different icons according to your preferences and tastes...

Thank you for the reply, but I don't think you can save directly in .ico with Paint
With GIMP yes, but every time just before saving I get the message

I was in the process of replying and trying again with GIMP (but I was taking screenshots along the way just in case it didn't work), hence the beginning of my message, but I must have missed some variables because now it works. I'm not marking it as resolved right away just in case!

I don't think you can save directly as .ico with Paint
No, with Paint the possibilities are reduced to their simplest expression and this format is not supported...
With GIMP it's simple: you do what you want with your image and then Export as --> "Name of your image" and .ico then finish the export with the default settings in the location of your choice (desktop or elsewhere). The icon is ready and can be used whenever and wherever you want...
It can only work... ;)
