Yes, indeed, to cancel an invoice, we transfer it to a credit note.
So pay attention to the terms used:
Validation "freezes" an invoice (meaning it can no longer be modified or deleted).
Devalidation allowed for the modification of this invoice.
It is this option that has been removed.

In your case, what you call "invalidating," is in a way the cancellation of the invoice. There, it doesn't matter whether it is validated or not, an invoice can be transferred to a credit note:
- When you write an invoice, your total amount is recorded as a debit, on one side, and your expense account and VAT as a credit on the other side.
- During the transfer to a credit note, there is an inversion. Your entry moves to the credit side and balances with the expense account and VAT on the debit side.
In the end, the two entries cancel each other out properly.
