My cassette Walkman isn't working.

Hello, I just came across this site, and I thought why not ask the question, surely someone can answer me;
so a friend of my mother's gave me her cassette Walkman two weeks ago because I wanted one, and she kindly gave it to me, but the thing is it doesn't work, I put in new batteries, I haven't really cleaned it but I don't see what to clean other than just wiping it with a cloth; and so when I press PLAY it doesn't spin, but I don't have a cassette yet, so I'm thinking maybe it only spins when there’s a cassette in it, but I don't know, so I'm wondering if there’s another problem and if I should go to a special place? Otherwise, the buttons have no issues, they click very well, they don't get stuck, it's in good condition you could even think it's new, and I'll give you its reference, it's the HS-G35 AIWA stereo cassette player (auto reserve).
Thank you in advance, I really want to get it working because I'm so eager to be able to listen to music with it!

    When you press play, a metal playback head appears. Clean it with a cotton swab soaked in 90-degree alcohol, and it should work with a cassette tape inside, of course!
