How to remove vertical black bars on a 16:9 screen?

Hello,

Here is my problem. I work on two screens. One is 16:9 (resolution 1920x1080) and the other is a 17-inch which is nearly square (1280x2024). When I'm not watching a video, everything works fine, the resolution is good. But when I watch a video on the 16:9 screen, vertical black bars appear. If I dare to watch a film that originally has horizontal black bars (640x480), then it’s a disaster: the horizontal black bars are amplified, and the vertical bars are huge! As a result, the image is tiny.

On the 17-inch screen, it adds horizontal bars (but I assume that's normal, and it doesn't bother me).

When I watch these same films on a 16:9 television, I have no issues of this kind. The films are in full screen, no vertical bars.

I have a laptop on which I face the same problem as on my 16:9 screen.

This is particularly annoying as I am editing films on Adobe Premiere for which I composed the music. I would like to put it on my website, but I can't because these vertical bars don't look professional or respectful of the editors' work (at least if they remain on all computers).

Do you know how to remove these vertical bars on a 16:9 screen of a computer?

Thank you!

Thank you for your response,
I don't understand why so many adjustments are necessary on a 16:9 computer screen, while on my 16:9 television, the image is immediately optimized, without vertical bars on the sides?

Hello, I assure you that if you closely look at your 4:3 source image on your TV that you will display in full screen 16:9, it will inevitably be stretched in width and shortened in height. Sometimes it's bearable for landscapes; other times, characters, especially, appear squished and larger. Your TV cannot create data (images) and display them with pixels. You often have movies on channels that have bars; give it a try.
