Laptop jack port works halfway.

Hello, I took apart my laptop to clean it, and I put it back together. Now, when I plug my headphones into the jack, I only get sound from the left side; however, if I partially insert the jack, I have sound in both speakers of the headphones. Has anyone ever had this issue? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Configuration: Windows / Chrome 61.0.3163.100

Are you using the same headset..? Haven't you changed the jack plug...?

Did you unscrew the jack connector on the wire..? or the socket that is on the PC..?

Because as @francoins says, a washer solves the problem, but that means that the mechanical parts have shifted from their previous state...

    Hello.

Indeed, something happened inside this jack. It's quite a complex jack since it contains the headphone contacts, the PC speaker contacts, and contact strips that switch between either the headphone or speaker position. Otherwise, these mini contacts are very fragile. You can either choose the washer solution, which is sometimes temporary, or replace the miniature jack. The cost is negligible, but it's about finding a jack with roughly the same dimensions.

    For example >>>

    Hi . . .

There's no use in rushing; you need to leave on time . . .

There may be defective soldering on this socket... you could redo each solder joint on this jack, even if no defects are visible.

As for finding the jack that goes with it, that's a mission impossible; it's certainly a special Asian production for MSI.

It's not possible without having the component in hand and spending a lot of time on the Web to find an equivalent.

Furthermore, desoldering the old one without breaking the circuit board traces requires significant experience and appropriate tools.

    Hello.

The risks are indeed great as the tracks on the printed circuit board are small.

In case one day the washer solution no longer works, opt for a sound card with USB input.

    EXAMPLE >>>

This is just a suggestion of course. Because if one day you decide to resell the PC, the potential buyer likes it when everything works . . . . initially! Ideally, you should find the same part that I found on eBay but a complete motherboard and at a price . . . exorbitant!

    Bye

    Hello,

Have you also disassembled the motherboard..?

You are simultaneously talking about the speakers and the headset... You need to be clear..?

The speakers are in the PC case while the headset refers to earphones..

... is the jack of the headset soldered to the motherboard or connected by wires to the motherboard..? I think a wire is unsoldered or broken.

    I haven't removed the motherboard.
The jack plug. I meant the speakers that are in the headset. When I plug the jack halfway, it works perfectly, that's what I don't understand. And yes, there are wires between the motherboard and the jack.

The contacts inside the socket in question can become loose. The washer issue lasted about three years. One day I removed that washer and it worked normally.

There is no speaker in a headset... there are only headphones.

You put it halfway, it's normal, the contact is made by rings on the jack... when you are facing it, it works with one headphone and if you push it further, it's the same with the neighboring contact, but you change headphones.

Moral of the story, one of the two rings is no longer making contact, you must have pulled or broken a wire going to the jack...

I think you didn’t quite understand. When I put half of the pin into the jack, both headphones work. And once it’s all the way in, only one headphone works.

Good evening. I had this case before; I used a washer to achieve the desired thickness and the problem was solved.

Indeed, upon taking off the cover a second time, I forced the jack on the motherboard. I can either tinker directly on it or order a new one. But it seems a bit special; it's on an MSI GE62 2QE APACHE PRO.
In the photo, it's the one on the left.

Hello. I've already changed it. It's simple, you just need to carefully desolder the connector, look at how it's arranged, and find a similar model online. There are all kinds of models.

You can use solder braid or a small solder sucker. The printed circuit board will be preserved.

Thank you for your response, I will see what I can do. By the way, what do you mean by the washer?

A simple washer that can be found anywhere. Made of metal or plastic, as long as it has the right thickness. It should be placed on the male jack before plugging it into the female socket.
