How to stop seeing a contact on Messenger without blocking them?

Hello,
I want to stop seeing someone on Messenger, but without blocking her. Basically, I want her to still be able to see me and I want to leave her the option to contact me if she wants to. (Yes, it's an ex :D)
Is it possible?

To disable notifications, go here: click on "friends" and next to their name, uncheck the box "receive notifications"
To no longer see them in instant messaging, click on it in the bottom right corner of any Facebook page, then click on "options" (the small gear icon), then on "advanced settings" and make your choice. This way, you will no longer be able to see each other, but you can still talk to each other in that place.
