There is necessarily a modification or a comment lingering around.
On the contrary, you need to display "all markup" in the Review group's menu, then the only way to get rid of it is to sweep through the document by clicking on "Next" and then the "Accept" or "Reject" commands.
If there's a comment - just use the "delete" command.

I never claimed that hiding the pane was enough to not display the revisions, but hiding this pane could meet André's needs regarding not having a large sidebar that appears.

Maybe my answer won't solve the problem,
but before dismissing it outright, I believe you could at least give him the benefit of the doubt: let's wait for the requester's reply; if that's it, great! if not, sometimes a possible answer is better than no answer at all.
