Hello, is it possible to download Windows 7 for free to replace Vista, as I have a laptop that I would like to give to my granddaughter and I believe Vista no longer has updates.

Hello,
You purchase a license and download the Windows 7 ISO here: https://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/software-download/windows7 or by following the instructions after purchasing the license.
To legally retrieve the Windows 7 ISO (you will still need a license key):

Then you have two methods:
Here are the main steps to follow for both methods.
For the upgrade:
Start the Windows 7 installation program by inserting the Windows 7 DVD while running Windows, then click Install now. If the autorun program does not open the Install Windows screen, navigate to the root folder of the DVD and double-click setup.exe.
Click on Download the latest updates for installation (recommended) to download important updates for Windows 7. This step is optional. If you choose not to search for updates during installation, click on Don’t get the latest updates for installation.
Read and accept the terms of the Microsoft® software license agreement. Click on I accept the terms of the license agreement (required to use Windows), then click Next. If you click on I do not accept (installation canceled), the Windows 7 installer will close.
Click on Upgrade (recommended) to upgrade your existing Windows installation.
A compatibility check is performed. If issues are found, a report is presented to you. If you proceed, some drivers may not work after the upgrade. Some incompatibilities may prevent the upgrade and block you from continuing.
If no incompatibilities are detected, the Windows 7 installer will continue without requiring further interaction.

Note:
- Prepare an installation medium on a USB stick or DVD. It is better to use Rufus: how to download Rufus - see this tutorial for details: how to create a Windows installation USB stick
- Boot from it by changing the boot sequence and selecting the USB stick or DVD: How to boot the computer from a USB stick
- Follow the prompts to install Windows 7.
- During the partitioning phase, select the system partition and format it.
- Proceed with the installation on this system partition.
- Select the main partition
- Format the partition
- Install Windows on it.
- Follow the prompts.
Install all updates.
