Hello,

I switched to Windows 10 in 2016 and, since then, everything has been going well. Relatively, of course. :)

However, for the past few days, the notepad.exe file opens but remains a button on the taskbar. I've tried everything to maximize it. Nothing works.

I can see the button on the taskbar with the file title or the mention "Untitled" if I open Notepad from the homepage. But the application itself, the Notepad window, does not appear.

If I right-click on the button, I see the usual menu and can close the program. If I just hover over the button with my mouse, a thumbnail appears that I can right-click on, and then I get the menu with Restore, Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize, and Close. Only Restore and Close are clickable.

If I click on Restore and go back to the menu, this time Maximize is also clickable (not greyed out). But it doesn't work; the window never appears.

Thank you for your help,

Pierre Cloutier

Configuration: PC, Win 10, Office 7

Hello, try downloading another copy of Notepad.exe, I believe you can find one with a little Google search. (Beware of viruses) Then go to C:/WINDOWS/system32/ and copy the file to that destination, and click on "Replace the file" (or something like that) and that's it!
I'm not sure the file is on the Internet, but give it a try anyway :)
I hope I helped you!

You can also download similar software (like Notepad++) https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.4.2.html
Install it, (check the box 'create shortcut on desktop' during installation.)
Then, go to your desktop and rename the software file 'notepad' and copy it, then go to C:/windows/system32/ and paste it in that location and click on "Replace the file" (or something like that)
and there you go! Now you have a new version of Notepad! I hope I helped you.

Oups

In C:\Windows\System32\, it is impossible to delete or rename Notepad.exe

Even entering the administrator password results in access denied.

I've even heard that I need permission from TrustedInstaller. What kind of nonsense is this?

Hi,

Because by default, you don't have permissions to modify Windows files, the owner is TrustedInstaller.
However, you can give yourself the rights, more info: https://www.malekal.com/comment-retirer-les-autorisations-trustedinstaller/
