PSP was enjoyable for you. So you should find your way around with Gimp.
Note that, as mentioned, X11 is required.

Perhaps the downloaded version of Gimp is not the right one??

You need to be very careful to download the version that is suitable for both the type of Mac OS and the type of processor of Mac OS, on this page: http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/download.html

Then, at least for me, (For the occasion, I just tested downloading and launching The Gimp under X11 for the first time - I had tested it under Linux / Ubuntu), during the first launch, it takes quite a while, it launches X11 then creates several folders, I even got an error message saying that a certain folder already exists, then Gimp initializes slowly.
After that it works, (but it's not fast compared to Photoshop and much less user-friendly). The second launch is significantly faster, but the application is still not a speed demon. (Under Linux it is faster)

I think you have a bad version of The Gimp, because otherwise it should work.

PhotoFiltre's only interest is to automate basic operations... For any serious retouching work, PhotoShop is the only one that is complete and, above all, does not degrade the edited image (One must know how to handle it, as "fiddling" with curves, levels, and other tools is not done just any old way...).

No, to my knowledge, Photofiltre is not available for Mac... Too bad because it's useful for automating certain functions... But anyway, it has nothing to do with Photoshop!

It has all the image editing features without being as complicated as PhotoShop: cropping, brightness, contrast, gamma, etc.
It allows you to open and save over 100 different image formats, convert from one to another, and batch process images...
It's a must-have that I bought the first version of 10 years ago and that is regularly updated; you can use it without immediately purchasing the license, but I think that when the product is good and you use it, it's only fair to pay the tiny license fee demanded ;-)

Well, on iPhoto... you can't do much, you can't crop, play with opacity, perspective, etc...

PWhy don't you use iPhoto? Isn't it easier? :)

What seems to be causing...

Have you looked in your Applications > Utilities folder? Often, X11 is installed by default on the Mac and you might not have noticed it.

If you can't find it in that folder, search for it using Spotlight (10.4 or 10.5) or Sherlock (10.2 or 10.3). The easiest way is to press Command-F in Finder and type X11 in the search box of the window that opens.

To help you better, please provide the exact model of your Mac and the version of Mac OS.
