Hello,
This thread is a bit old, but I am facing the same issue and have very little knowledge about computers.
I have an OpenOffice file that I can no longer open and I don't know how to fix it.
As soon as I click on it, an error message appears: Read error. Format error in the sub-document content.xml file at position 2,4622 (row, col).
I tried to open it on Google Docs, but without success. Would you be able to help me?
Thank you in advance
Configuration: Mac OS X (10.11.3) / Safari 9.0.3

You need to update your office suite to avoid this kind of problem, but your file has been corrupted.
To recover your work:
1- Make a copy of the original corrupted file.odt, we will call the copy copiecorrompu.odt
2- Rename the file copiecorrompu.odt to copiecorrompu.zip
3- Extract the zip file into a folder
4- Open the content.xml file located in the extracted folder (avoid using Windows Notepad, prefer a software like Notepad++)
5- In the content.xml file, delete everything between the <office:automatic-styles> and </office:automatic-styles> tags (you need to delete these tags as well)
6- Save the content.xml file (you need to save it over itself)
7- Compress all the files in the folder into a zip and rename the zip to repare.odt
8- Open it, and if it asks you to repair it, say yes
There, your file should now be repaired.
To update, I recommend uninstalling Apache OpenOffice and switching to LibreOffice 5.2.1:

LibreOffice is the best alternative to Microsoft Office. It’s not for nothing that LibreOffice is the default in almost all Linux distributions. -
It's "enough" to:
Change the file extension from .ods to .zip
Download and install Context available here, I hope this helps you: https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/developpement/6383-context/
Edit with Context the files styles.xml and content.xml
