Hello,
I accidentally threw some photo folders in the trash (and emptied the trash). I have a Mac OSX Intel. I understand that the disktest/photorec software can help me recover these files. I have downloaded the software, but I don't know what to do next... I don't understand anything! Could someone help me? Thank you! Delphine

Hello,
After quite a bit of research, I managed to use photorec.
The hardest part is the beginning...
I'm posting this on this page (which is a bit outdated) because I stumbled upon it quickly during my research.
To use photorec with Mac OS X:
1) download photorec (testdisk is included in the download)
2) go to utilities --> Terminal.app
3) in the terminal type sudo (space) and drag the photorec file (with the gray window) located in the folder you downloaded (testdisk-6.14).
4) press enter. the user password (the one to turn on the computer) is requested.
5) type your password (note that it does not appear on the screen) and press enter.
6) photorec opens, follow the instructions:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Etape_par_Etape
Nopseudo, to avoid downloading all files, go to 'file opt' (will appear next to 'options' and 'search' in the 2nd step). There, you can select only the types of files you are looking for (e.g., indd, pdf, etc.) by pressing 's' to deselect all and 'x' to select what interests you.
Thank you photorec

Hello,
you need to use the terminal. Go to the utility folder and open the application called terminal.
Type:
sudo
(with a space after sudo)
and drag and drop photorec or testdisk into the terminal window. This will add, after "sudo," the path to the file.
Press the return key.
It will ask you for the admin password, which you need to enter.
Photorec/testdisk will launch, and it will likely ask you to enlarge the window.
Then, just navigate with the arrow keys and follow the instructions.
That said, for my part, I have not been able to restore data anywhere other than on the system disk, and since mine is almost full, I can hardly recover anything.

Thank you for the information, but:
1- which file to use, I found myself with FOUR DIFFERENT folders:
(testdisk-6.11.1, testdisk-6.11, testdisk-6.1, testdisk-6.2)
2- When I put one of these folders in the terminal, I get the message: "No such file or directory". Obviously, I may not be using the right folder.
Thank you for your response.

Hello everyone,
I don't know if I'll get a response 7 years after this discussion :) but I'm currently trying to install Photorec (the version mentioned here), and Terminal never asks me for my password. So, I’m not sure if anyone has an idea why, but it would be appreciated :)
Thank you all.

I used photorec, and actually, it recovers EVERYTHING on the hard drive (I went for a little walk before it finished, and there are photos from the game TrackMania, and everything. BUT I DON’T CARE ABOUT THIS STUFF!!! Too bad, I’ll go through all the folders and delete what I don’t need :P => wish me good luck ;D
Hello,
Yes, even after seven years, it's possible to get a response. :-)
Complete explanation:
PHOTOREC:
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Etape_par_Etape
TESTDISK: https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Etape_par_Etape
There is also RECUVA, which is more user-friendly and easier to use.
If you feel your problem is solved, don't forget to report it:

One problem = one solution, the key is to find it. :-)

I have read everything carefully, but... I can't find my answer, maybe I'm just not good at it (which is the case with computers :) )
To summarize, I am supposed to first launch Photorec, and for that, I have to go through the terminal and sudo. However, that's where it doesn't work, even though I followed the instructions from the discussion above... I can't even install Photorec...

Hello,
To all those struggling to use Photorec on Mac, I recommend watching this very well-made video tutorial (click on the link).
Below as well is a copy of comments made on another post on CCM about the difference between Testdisk and Photorec:
===============
> Testdisk recovers partitions, photorec recovers files.
If you lost your partition table but the file systems are okay, testdisk will do the job.
But if the file systems are corrupted or deleted, you're out of luck. Even testdisk won't be able to do anything. In that case, only photorec will save the day.
These two software have different purposes. They are both useful.
===============
> I think it would be important to tell users what you just told me, to advise them to start with testdisk because I wasted valuable time doing both as I didn't see the difference other than that it's much more messy with photorec which puts everything in true and renames everything...
And I recovered everything just by repairing my partition; this should also be communicated to people that it doesn't erase the data to do this and that everything can actually come back as it was without recovery... 15 days saved depending on the disk size...
I hope that people will read my messages and that clarifications will be made, this software is great but not very understandable for a newcomer.
===============
Hopefully, this will help you see more clearly. :-))

Please be patient: I have a 10-hour time difference...

I'm currently trying, but... Terminal never asks me for my password, even though I've carefully followed all the steps. Do you have any idea why that might be?
