Maximum RAM Size under XP

Hello everyone,

I am a graphic designer (and I often use very large files). When I bought my last machine, I put in 2GB of memory (DDR2 5300 Corsair 2x 1GB). I quickly reach its limits and constantly switch to my virtual memory. I am going to buy 2 more sticks (4 slots in total).

I was wondering if it’s worth getting 2 sticks of 2GB each (same Corsair brand) or if XP Pro cannot use more than 4GB (in that case, in addition to my current 2 sticks of 1GB, I would get 2 more sticks of 1GB to reach a total of 4GB... instead of 6GB).

My motherboard (Asus P5B Deluxe) can support up to 8GB... So my question is whether 6GB would really be utilized on my system or not (the price is "not an issue" given the drop in the price of memory sticks!).

Thank you for your answers.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

Yes, Windows XP can handle 6 GB of RAM (DDR2 5300). However, it is important to note that the 32-bit version of Windows XP has a limit of about 4 GB of usable memory due to addressing limitations. If you need to utilize more RAM, you would need to use a 64-bit version of Windows. Your motherboard (Asus P5B Deluxe) supports up to 8 GB of RAM.

Hello Lol7,

For XP in 32 bits, the safe value is 2GB; you can increase it to 4GB if your hardware allows (see PAE). This topic has already been discussed, so here are some links from CCM and Microsoft:

And if you want a powerful machine, you might want to take lessons on overclocking... at your own risk!
