Hello,

I have a little problem,

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, and when I click on “Start” then “Shut down”, the “Stand by” option is gray (I can't activate it) while the other two options “Shut down” and “Restart” work.

How can I reactivate it knowing that I tried in “Control Panel” but couldn't find anything to activate.

Thank you for your responses.

Hello,

In 'Control Panel' + 'Power Options', you need to enable hibernation. In the 'Hibernation' tab, the box 'Enable Hibernation' must be checked.

Then, the option to hibernate when shutting down the computer is available...

You need to press the Shift key normally (my laptop tells me to) but I'm still unable to activate the sleep icon since I can't find the sleep tab.

Well! I disabled it and the button is still operational!

Unless otherwise stated, it has another problem...

Hello, I have the same issue... when I want to put it to sleep, this function is not accessible... I just read the memo indicating a "hibernate" tab in the power options!! Do you have any suggestions? Thank you all and best wishes for 2008.

Hello everyone,
So if you think I'm changing the subject, just let me know, thanks^^

Anyway, I would like to know how to put the computer to sleep while keeping 1 or 2 programs open?
Is it possible?
Difficult? (no worries, I'll manage)
Any software to download? (no problem)

Thank you for your help.

Actually, I have a computer in Paris with a 20 Mega connection, and a computer in the countryside with 1 Mega, so I would like to set up a Crysis server on the computer in Paris so that when I tell my friends to join my server, there won't be any connection drops for them or for me.

If I do it with my 1 Mega connection, well after 2 to 3 players everyone gets disconnected and no one can play! So everyone leaves and it annoys me, plus my computer is crap!

Crysis: is a powerful war game in terms of configuration and connection.

My computer configuration?
2 Nvidia GeForce Gx2 in SLI https://www.nvidia.com/fr-fr/geforce/20-series/

AMD Phenom II x4 processor (940 sometimes it’s called the pressizer but I mention it because there’s the 920 which is a bit less powerful) https://www.lesnumeriques.com/cpu-processeur/amd-phenom-ii-x4-940-p4523/test.html

2 CD drives and burners

Nvidia Nforce motherboard https://www.nvidia.com/fr-fr/geforce/20-series/

And that's it, it's just the 1 Mega connection that sucks otherwise I'm all set ^^

Thank you for being willing to reply.

Goodbye.

Your problem is quite different from what the newbies above are discussing. If your sleep icon is disabled, it's because one of the devices or an internal card on your computer has a faulty or non-functional driver. To remedy this, update your computer's drivers (especially your graphics card driver, as this is the case 90% of the time).

You can check your hardware by going to the Control Panel found in your Computer, then to System, then to the Hardware tab, and finally to Device Manager. If a component shows up with a yellow exclamation mark or question mark, it’s likely the cause of your problem.

Good luck with your endeavor.

Thank you, I spent hours troubleshooting. Fortunately, I read your message and remembered that I had a similar issue before. It was indeed the graphics card that was malfunctioning. I just had to ask Windows to update the driver and restart the computer to regain the sleep functions.

Hello,
did it work before?
Because it could be related to your motherboard not managing sleep mode, or maybe it's the settings in the BIOS, but I know less about that...

One more thing, does your PC shut down properly when you click shut down? I mean, you don't have to press the power button to turn it off?

Hello,

I have the same problem, I read all the answers here and I did what "RoulioZ" said:

Control panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager

I indeed found 4 items with an exclamation mark. I tried to update these items, it worked with one, but unfortunately it doesn't work with the other 3: "Mass Storage Controller", "Video Controller", and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)".
I updated, I also reinstalled... and it says: cannot install this hardware :( :(
So what is the solution?

Go to the manufacturer's website of your PC to download the drivers.

Go to Ma-Config.com to find your drivers.

Ah!

Loora, you have already received a response on the Miscellaneous forum:
http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-1889428-mise-en-veille-sous-xp

There must be a problem with ACPI (the power management in Windows XP). XP needs to enable ACPI (but I don't remember where that is...). Otherwise, the last case is that the motherboard doesn't support ACPI, so the option is not available under XP...

Check that all the drivers are installed correctly and then retry
if not go to (start/control panel/display/screen saver/power management and then activate the screensaver.

Hello,

right-click on the device... then Properties, then Details, after click on Device Description... then select Hardware Ids, right-click on it and then copy and paste it here to help you find the drivers.

Example the Bluetooth device on my PC > BTHENUM\{db1d8f12-95f3-402c-9b97-bc504c9a55c4}_LOCALMFG&000f

Oh yes! I just read through all your dialogue and solved my problem: the driver for my video controller wasn't the right one. By clicking on the yellow question mark in the Device Manager, it launched the driver search, and on the motherboard CD there was the correct one that hadn't been installed when I reinstalled my machine. There you go, sleep mode is accessible again. Thank you all.
