Hello,
I was normally chatting with a friend about a month ago in private messaging on Facebook (or instant messaging), but today I just checked my inbox and I see that their photo is the default Facebook one (white on a light blue background) and their first and last name have disappeared and been replaced by "Facebook User", and it's impossible to click on it. However, the messages we sent each other in the conversation are still displayed.
Does this mean that they have "deactivated" their Facebook account? Or does it mean that they have "permanently deleted" their Facebook account?
Thank you for giving me an answer only if you know, I haven't heard from this friend since :(

Hello,
There are 2 plausible cases: either her account has been deleted or disabled.
If she was in violation of certain Facebook rules (for example, using a nickname instead of her real name, identity theft on her photo, etc.), it was simply disabled while waiting for her to provide a valid response to recover it.
But if it has been deleted, then there is nothing she can do about it.
Best regards, a panda.

In that case, the discussions wouldn't be visible anymore, it seems to me...?
A little thing I found while browsing:
https://www.facebook.com/about/basics/stay-safe-and-secure/deactivating
And here you just need to read the last line:

Some of your activities on Facebook are not stored in your account. For example, a friend will always keep your messages even after you delete your account. This information persists even after your account is deleted.
Sincerely
